The film climax was perfectly timed and the ending full of subtle irony. As usual, nice girls finish last. Atypical role for Bette, but great nonetheless

These two actresses hated each other, and that just made their work together better. If a two-diva battle is your idea of fun, this is the movie for you. Hopkins is so good in this part I'd like to slap her myself.

The film was not at all what I'd expected, but it was a true thrill following the "best friends" diva battle: Bette Davis vs Miriam Hopkins. Mirriam the immature, Bette the voice of reason and a surprisingly goody role for her to the more selfish character which Hopkins had. All very soapy, but there was something really fascinating about the two that totally drew me in. Best I've seen Hopkins since the early 30s!

"My dear, I was hiding behind screens before you were born." Bette Davis as a wise, mature intellectual sounds deadly dull, but it isn't--not in the least. Pauline Kael: "Trashy fun, on an unusually literate level [...] it features bitchery and keeps its passages of self-sacrifice fairly tart. Miriam Hopkins is [Davis's] flouncy, butterfly-brained friend [...] It spans 18 years of their love-hate friendship, including a glorious scene in which Davis shakes the catty, hysterical Hopkins."
