On Again-Off Again

On Again-Off Again

1937
Comedy
The comedy team of Bert Wheeler and Robert Woolsey are atypically cast as bickering "friendly enemies" in On Again-Off Again. Based on the old stage farce A Pair of Sixes (previously filmed in 1930 as Queen High), the film stars the comedians as Hobbs and Horton, co-owners of a profitable pill manufacturing concern. Forever at each other's throats, the partners are in danger of losing their business thanks to their incessant squabbling. (allrovi.com)

Spritely late Wheeler and Woolsey pick that has a good pace. Seeing the usual buddy team so completely antagonistic toward each other is a hoot, and the plot gets enough room to pay off remarkably well. This is a great swan song for the duo... too bad they made one more after it.

Wheeler & Woolsey runs a pill manufacture company and really should take some of those pills themselves, always fighting and wanting to split the company. So to settle their differences they decided to have a wrestling match to make the loser the winner's manservant for a year! Not their best work, but it's funny. It's Wheeler & Woolsey! They don't know any other way then funny! I did miss Dorothy Lee by Bert's side even if Marjorie Lord wasn't a too bad a replacement.
