A wonderfully ribald comedy with delectable performances from its four leads, On Approval perfectly toes the line with what could be acceptably said on film at the time, with fantastic wordplay that snuck past the censors and remains hilariously cutting to this day. It's a real treat, and as such, a real shame that Clive Brook only made the one movie.

This is one of my favorite movies of all time, full of unforgettable small pleasures. Who can forget Bea Lillie's perfect delivery of her famous line, "You will find the dinghy by the jetty."? Pauline Kael: "Googie Withers demonstrates that an actress can be utterly charming even while parodying romantic charm. [...] The real star of the piece is the fantastically adroit Clive Brook; his timing is perfection, both in the role of the exhausted, effete Duke, and in the direction."

An underseen gem, and, after Kind Hearts and Coronets, probably the funniest British movie of the 40s. The four principles are all terrific, but Beatrice Lillie and Clive Brook deserve special mention. I can't believe it hasn't been remade.

A supreme joy and criminally unknown - a comedy of so many manners its upper lip is permanently stiff. Every line is explosively funny and delivered in the deadest pan ("She's not crying because I said she was forty-one. She's crying because she is forty-one.") The four leads seem less to act than to embody their roles. It's near perfection.

Worth watching for the weird dream sequence at the end. Pretty quick witted humor

Witty British sex comedy from before there was sex. Who knew dry old fox Clive Brook had it in him. He was so confident that he did the screenplay and directed this popular play! Big thumbs up!
