The opening number (you know the one... "New York, New York, it's a wonderful town!") is fantastic. Unfortunately, it's all downhill from there: flat characters, dated humor, poor pacing, and an awful ending. Not a classic by any stretch.

I'll admit there were a few good laughs, some intentional, others not so much. But in spite of that, and the charm of Sinatra and Kelly, most of the film falls flat. The musical numbers have good ideas behind them but their staging is mixed and every one of them goes on for way too long. The rest of the story is dull and thin, making everything that doesn't bring a laugh groan-worthy. Add in some obvious filler scenes and you get a forgettable film.

“New York, New York” is a brilliant opening number, but had the rest of Bernstein’s original score been used, the film’s music would likely be a great deal more memorable, because Edens’ songs are hopelessly drab. The cast have so little to work with but Betty Garrett still really shines.

When people say they hate musicals, this is exactly the kind of thing they have in mind. Everything is so painfully corny and exaggerated, without any charm. The jokes are bad and the situations are stupid and even the characters aren't very likeable. A few of the songs are decent, but most of them are blah and a couple are even annoying. The dance routines are uninspired. And even with the racy undertones, it's all just so gosh-darned wholesome. An obnoxious and joyless experience.

Amidst all the cornball plotting, "wacky" slapstick humor, and relentless political incorrectness at nearly every turn (some of which is weirdly amusing, other aspects much less so) are some genuinely clever and nicely written songs, as well as Kelly and Donen's usual impressive choreography and mis-en-scene. Still, it's pretty far away from the greatness of Singin' in the Rain...

Dashing, timeless musical, the like thereof to which I want to take my grandchildren. And ooh, GAWD, Ann Miller's legs

More sexed-up than Singing In The Rain - not the greatest movie, but a terrific musical!

Considering that this is coming up to 60 years old it's packed with some great numbers and should bring a smile to anyone's face. Not as punchy or quick paced as the stage show this does struggle a little compared to contemporary filmed musicals but is well worth watching. Some great backdrops and glimpses of New York providing a time capsule as well as a damn good film.

I can never see enough Gene Kelly movies. The addition of Frank Sinatra makes it even more entertaining.

Gene Kelly is pretty good, but the plot is so thin and the song and dance are so boring that it makes this movie drag on and on. There is no suspension of disbelief, because the transition between music and traditional scenes is so badly done that it's cringe worthy. The last twenty minutes are the only watchable ones in the movie, and had the entire thing been that good this movie would have definitely been at the very least tolerable.

Perhaps the best of all Hollywood musicals. Great script, great direction, great music, great performances.

"New York! New York! It's a wonderful town!" Ann Miller's "Prehistoric Man" amazing. And Vera-Ellen's first sequence is so memorable. And sunny Betty Garrett played the confidant comic role so well - and so rarely in these films.

Some OK moments but the story was totally lacking, and there was really only one notable song (New York, New York, a wonderful town!) There was unfortunately a lot of corny stuff involving stereotypes. I was not impressed and would not want to watch this one again.

Viewed July 3, 2014. Not as great as the Gene Kelly films that would follow it, but it's still a Technicolor Gene Kelly musical so it's hard not to have a blast while watching it. I mean, Sinatra is in it, too! I think the opening number is probably my favorite.

Gloriously entertaining musical is a prime example of pure and perfect entertainment - while the original stage show has been sweetened and sanitised for a 40s audience, the verve and energy with which this cast (and director) present the material successfully annihilates any quibbles in the transition. Highlighted by perennial bundle of energy Miller's breakthtaking dance sequences, and Garrett's hilarious pursuit of uncharacteristically hapless Sinatra.

A silly, inconsequential trifle of a film that just happens to contain a few of the greatest dance sequences in the history of American musicals. I'm a particularly a big fan of Gene Kelly and Vera Ellen's Dream ballet.

Shrill, forgettable songs, a loose, generic premise, and regrettable sexism and racism dilute the movie's infectious high spirits. It has plenty of upbeat flavor--mostly a result of its liberal use of classic Hollywood innuendo, unique female characters, and inventive choreography in two particularly memorable sequences--but the lack of a real plot means the runtime is padded out with songs, the weakest part of the film, and Kelly and Sinatra are given almost no material to show off their char

Should probably rewatch this after having seen Anchors Aweigh. This is probably better, especially given Kelly's excellent ballet sequence.

I guess this is what it looks like to make a sex comedy in 1949. Double entendres and striking positioning set the stage. Gene Kelly is good. Sinatra looks like he doesn't know what he's doing when he isn't singing. The two assertive women bring some comedy to their roles. But there's a lot of filler here, especially between songs.

There's not just one, but two painfully racist musical numbers, which definitely brings the down the film a couple notches; which is shame because it has so many strengths: inventive choreography and camerawork, infectious charisma and charm, censor-provoking innuendo, a blend of realism and formalism that somehow works really well, and of course, tap-dancing gay sailors, which will always be a plus in my books.

Forgettable songs that go on too long, corny dialogue. Betty Garrett and the location work are good but this really did nothing for me.

Unfortunately the film peaks with the opening tune, 'New York, New York', and from then on the lame story line plays our very predictably. Kelly and Sinatra are both very charming whereas Munshin just seems like a third wheel. Vera-Ellen has impressive on screen presence for such a diminutive person, which enables her to really smash out the dance numbers with verve, precision and control. However the same cannot be said for Garrett and Millet who try to keep up but fail to do so.

"On the Town" is an old-style Hollywood musical. It's light on plot but full of lighthearted banner, dancing, and singing.

Two icons and a nobody. Or a career that didn't pan out that great. Jules Munshin did get sporadic gigs in Hollywood, he was hardly a household name like Frank Sinatra & Gene Kelly were. A joyous night On the Town (1949) for three sailors full and fun and music. One of the classic ones of its kind. I always see clips of this one in documentaries talking about the era. True Hollywood fluff stuff.

A proper old fashioned musical. I could do without the artistic ballet summing up the plot bit, but Gene Kelly gotta Gene Kelly.
