Incredible film. At nearly 4 hours you would expect it to be boring but it never is, in fact the time passes by very quickly. Regret has never been done better before and I love all the themes that Leone touched on. That ending was great, almost started applauding, you could interpret it a million different ways. Cinematography is incredible and to the people that complain about the misogyny: do you not realize it was set in the 1930's? And ps, the men aren't exactly saints either.

Sergio Leone, what a master of cinema, a shame he didn't get to make more films. A true masterpiece of sound, imagery and lost friendship, as beguiling as its main characters. I couldn't take my eyes off the screen, save for the moments I had to wipe the tears from my eyes.

Unfolds a mystery of memory and time unto a shattered tapestry where past, present & future all coexist in a melancholic haze of hope, dreams & regret. Everything from acting & music to cinematography & editing is pretty much flawless. The storytelling is rich, multilayered and effortlessly flowing. No other film better expresses the connection between the function of human memory and the mechanics of cinema. As intensely rewarding as anything l've ever seen on film.

Highly-praised, but great sets and lush photography cannot conceal that this is a movie of thoroughly unlikeable cardboard-cutout characters who are moved through a ludicrous plot uttering third-rate dialogue, with inexplicably lengthy pauses between almost every line. The performances are poor by both the known stars and the youthful actors playing their counterparts, and the syrupy Morricone score does not help. Looks very nice on Blu-ray but this movie cannot be recommended. My first Leone.

Watching a movie of almost four hours may sound like work but this one is pure enjoyment. The photography of NYC during the prohibition is nothing but awesome. Woods an de Niro are perfect, it's incredible what tensions these two give to that powerful script of honour, reason and friendship among criminals. A tension that's further supported by the great pace and the wonderful selection/composition of music. Leone and Morricone - two masters of cinema.

Four hours and I damn near enjoyed every minute of it. Leone's direction is brilliant, his pacing, his camerawork, it all ties together perfectly, I didn't expect it to be so good considering Leone is famous for his westerns in large wide open settings. The chemistry between the boys from hoodlum to gangster is extremely well done, as well as Ennio Moriccone's fantastic score (who knew a pan flute could be so amazing). A Gangster Classic.

Leone breaks away from the western genre to direct this crime film masterpiece. The cinematography is stunning, the pacing is ace, and the cast provides more solid performances than you can shake a stick at. Coupled with an absolutely mesmerizing score from Morricone, Once Upon a Time in America makes four hours of film fly by.

An ambitious (in some ways over-ambitious) work, Leone's epic gets better on every viewing. What initially appears to be terrible flaws are either forgiven or turn out to somehow work after all. The worst exception is McGovern, odd one out in a great cast. Most of the scenes taking place in 1923 are perfection, and E.M.'s score is one of my favorites of all time. The narrative is brilliantly constructed, with us navigating Noodles' past, ending up sharing his memories and regrets. A masterpiece.

Despite nearly clocking in at four hours, it did what a lengthy movie should do in making it interesting and not seem as if it is just a big clunk of minutes caught on film. De Niro is great, Leone succeeds in making another epic movie and the music is just superb.

Sergio Leone proves himself the master of the towering historical epic with this intense examination of friendship and loyalty amongst Jewish gangsters in New York. The level of period detail is staggering in both the post-WWI and 1930's settings. Add in an incredible number of great acting performances (from both the child and adult actors) and Ennio Morricone's haunting score, and the result is an absolute classic. Nearly 4 hours and not a frame of film wasted.

Loads to enjoy here. Beautifully made on every front. If it has a flaw, it's that it is really difficult to like, or sympathise with, the characters. I'll need to give it another watch, but this is superb, epic filmmaking.

As romantic as epics come. Everything is seen through a thick haze of nostalgia, with Leone's photography and Morricone's wistful score giving it a grand quality. I'd complain - it's the very picture of excess - if I wasn't so enthralled by it. You can feel Leone's passion and care for the material in every frame. It's far more character study - an examination of friendship and betrayal - than gangster film. Makes four hours seem like a drop in the bucket.

One-dimensional characterization, a muddled final act, frustratingly nonsensical character motivations (rape is virtually treated as a joke in one scene, its victim drawn to her aggressor), and some embarrassing dialogue and performance ("Squeeze me harder and I'll poop my pants!") drag down what could have been a classic tale of loyalty, regret, and what it means to grow up--or simply grow old. I cannot help but feel Leone was out of his element, here--something that truly pains me to say.

An operatic depiction of emotional and material "poverty". None of the characters come out of this mess clean. Leone's genius was only confirmed when the studio objected to release the film in its intended length and non-linear form. Morricone's score is hypnotizing and as important as any other element in this first great film for my very own "childhood poverty". Acting is superb, although De Niro has been better before or after this film. No, it's not flawed, it's just honest yet captivating.

It begins in confusion, with three timelines edited together in an amorphous and jarring manner. But soon it settles into a measured and epic rise-and-fall story, at once a sensitive coming-of-age tale and violent mafioso requiem. Its sense of nostalgia is strong. The period design is remarkably detailed, and Morricone's score lends the film a mythological tone.

Considering this is the spiritual successor to Once Upon a Time in the West, you'd think it would have been a lot better. It's awfully hard to take a movie seriously when everyone is saying "noodles" all the time. And yet, this movie takes itself very seriously: all solemn speeches, cheap symbolism, and meaningful zooms. Perhaps expectation ruined this film for me. I often heard it matched the "Godfather", and some even say it's superior. I was expecting to be blown away, to not notice it's hefty length, to be kept guessing and to be stunned by it's cast. I was stunned by De Niro and Woods, to be fair. I was left disappointed by the rest of the film. It is unnecessarily long, its plot is bland and predictable, and I was left with a feeling of utter indifference to every character. Unfortunately rather average.

Despite being nearly four hours long (it was nearly eight hours for me, I watch this behemoth twice in a row), this is an incredibly unboring and beautiful film that compares the lives of some yankee hoodlums and the professional gangsters they grow up to become (through wonderful transistions between timelines). This is a masterpiece of the cinema if I ever saw one, and I just have to mention the sublime score of Morricone. Better than the Godfather films? You betcha!

Epic drama, quite unusual for Leone but so skilfully made in the settings of the big city. For me it is never going to reach "The Godfather" level but it will stay in my memory as one of the most dramatic and touching gagster stories. De Niro as good as he always used to be in his old movies. The music by Mariccone makes the crime movie more mild and tragic at the same time.

This film follows a group of friends as they rise and fall in the crime underbelly of America. Robert De Niro and James Woods anchor a very well directed and acted film. But, with Sergio Leone at the helm, what did you expect. Leone proves just as effective in a crime drama as he was in the westerns he is famous for. The guy just so happens to excel at two of my favorite genres. Make sure to watch the directors cut as it is the way the film was meant to be watched.

Beautiful sets, engaging cinematography, and measured pacing can't hide the fact that many characters simply don't have a relatable narrative or deep personalities. Some of the scenes and dialogue have not aged well at all. There are multiple scenes of severe sexual harassment that the makers of the film normalize and sublimate: in one case, the perpetrator even gets sentimental orchestral accompaniment as he sadly walks away from the incident. Please. First half 9/10, second half 6/10.

Apparently I saw this about 10 years ago and absolutely hated it. I decided to re-watch it recently and could barely recall it and and enjoyed it despite the lengthy runtime. Did I originally see a copy of the much reviled US Theatrical cut? There was enough to like - solid acting, laborious period recreation, a non-linear narrative that draws interesting parallels between its three timelines (or dreams?). But after 4 hours the characters remain uninteresting and one-dimensional, in a very rapey dimension from which the schmaltzy score tries to pardon them. The whole movie feels lecherous in an off-putting way. And naming the character 'Noodles' is some spaghetti bullshit, gimme a break Sergio

We feel nostalgy and melancholia because we can feel the passage of time, an accelerated look on a world in continuous changing that will leave us behind like an inappropriate tool, that destroy what we thought eternal. The most elegiac gangster film ever, so contrived and bleak that these four hours go on as en entire life. In fact, it is. As Noodles returns after 35 years, thinking that he got Max and his three friends killed when he turned them in -- to save them, btw --, what he sees is just sorrow and waste -- Max kept himself alive to become a politician, living with his money and his girl.
