2002
Drama

Dek, a decent but somewhat dull man, enjoys a happy existence with beloved girlfriend Shirley. They live together with her 12-year-old, Marlene--her daughter by the sexy but delinquent Jimmy, who flew the coop years ago and hasn't been heard from since. Dek loves Shirley, so much, that he proposes to her on national television. Jimmy sees the TV proposal and returns to town convinced that he can try to win back his wife and daughter, however he faces formidable opposition from almost every side. (imdb)

Underrated, there are many funny moments, memorable characters, and decent performances from everyone involved. Only suffers from the corny ending.

Almost up there with a good episode of Shameless. Quickly finds my affection.

A kind of screwball comedy [with touches, mainly in style & music, of spaghetti westerns] in a British setting. Sounds like a mess, but I quite liked it. Shane Meadows might be among my favorites of the directors coming up, certainly the most consistent, and always trying different approaches to his middle class tales.

Typical British comedy-drama, if you call Little Britain-style working-class grotesques comedy, and standard romcom plot drama.

Way too simplistic, way too anti-climactic. I liked all the characters, and the actors are really fun to watch interact (the interplay between Burke and Tomlinson feels very genuine), but there's really nothing in the antagonists (Jimmy is a cartoon of an evil ex-boyfriend; the Scottish criminals are harmless buffoons), so there's not much conflict and the whole thing feels inconsequential by the end.

I couldn't get into this film despite strong performances from Ifans, Carlyle and Burke. Henderson dipped in and out of her accent, but was otherwise fine. The unrelenting parade of deprivation in an ever-gloomy Midlands is a touch overdone, compounded by an equally bleak soundtrack. All of this to deliver a mediocre reliable-goof versus selfish bio-dad relationship triangle.
