Bleak and unsettling portrait of Chinese society is sometimes too dispassionately told by Wang, who seems more intent on providing an objective overview of the events as they happened; perhaps this is more reflective of her own personal connection to this, but it gives the film too much of a dry, textbook feeling at times. Arguably more troubling is the answer Wang provides to "what would you do?" as it becomes clear raising objections to the policies by the practitioners was simply impossible.

State-funded misogyny and its invisible everlasting effects. Sometimes repetitive and too expository, but always poignant documentary on nation's war against itself. Babies were killed, abandoned, given away, sold to orphanages. But the what strikes me the most is how everyone involved says they could not do anything, because this was how things were -- they had to obey, even if their acts were horrendous. Fearing its future, China killed their soul.
