I don't quite know the exact reason, but there's just something not quite right with how the story progress. It lacks the usual tension between the two main character, and everytime when it reaches a boiling-point it fizzles out unsatisfactory (even towards the end when things should be concluded somehow).

Not as much about a relationship as about the frailty of the passage of time; this glimpse-like narrative unfolds upon the audience like fragments of one's own memory. During the final scene I found myself looking back at these faux-memories as if I'd lived it all, and it was wonderful. Packs a surprising punch, and it'll stick with me. I didn't expect to like One Day, not even as I was half through it, but I'll be damned if it hadn't melted my heart by the end. Why don't people like Sturgess?

One Day is neither comedy nor satire; it uses numerous narrative gimmicks to avoid the fact of its humdrum banality.

An atrocious adaptation. The characters are all over the place (terrible casting does not help) and precisely none of the subtlety or emotion of the book is conveyed, which causes some scenes to make no sense at all. Even the fundamental "same-day-each-year" concept which made the book unique is reduced to an insignificant afterthought. I never imagined that anyone could destroy a character-driven story so badly in adapting it for another medium.

I might be totally heartless, but I hated that prick the whole time and felt sorry for the girl. And the story was boring.

Unfortunately I was disappointed by a wish washy chick flick. I understand the premise of the whole film was for the audience to see every July 15th, but it really hurt the pacing of the film. It felt broken and it was confusing to understand the narrative at times. It probably would have helped in Anne Hathaway could actually speak in an articulate English accent...

The film is exactly as boring as the summary here on Criticker warns you: "They are sometimes together, sometimes not, on that day". Well, and so what? Scherfig gets the best out of her actors, she really does, and as always there are many small, good laughs. But I'm afraid that's it. I don't particularly like Anne Hathaway (or her breasts, like everyone else), Sturgess has the charm of a dead frog and I only wanted to see the geek boyfriend make his stand-up show. He didn't - I was bored.

For what initially appears to be your standard rom-com, the leads are fairly unlikeable. Later on, it becomes clear that Nicholls and Scherfig are going for something else (that I won't spoil here) which sort of succeeds. There are problems getting there, though. The film is occationally cringe-worthy and more could have been made of the idea of continually skipping a year ahead in the narrative.

"For all her clear-eyed understanding of life's inevitable disappointments, Scherfig can only view her film's romantic angle with a combination of inevitability and gross sentimentality." - Andrew Schenker

It's sort of your typical love story about best friends falling in love with each other. Beautiful and simple. Got me teary-eyed at the ending. Dex's love for Em was overflowing that I felt it. Brilliant flow of story, lovable characters, two thumbs up and hands down! =))

I love syrup. And this is thickly swaddled in the stuff. Not just about a relationship, One Day delves into the power of the passage of time, and wears its nostalgic, mournful heart on its sleeve, hitting every emotional beat perfectly. I'm impressed.

I thought more was going to be made of the one day per year premise. Turns out it's just a normal day of the year that is barely referenced. The characters don't outwardly acknowledge the day, but rather the audience just happens to only see them on that day each year. It amounted to a flimsy premise, and seemed unnecessary in order to tell the story.

I really liked the novel, mainly due to believable characters and structure/device which felt fresh at the time. The film version is professionally done, but I doesn't really manage to utilize the structure in similarly successful way, and fails to show the passing of time. Still, Biggest problems lie with casting: Jim Sturgess simply lacks the charm required by his character. Hathaway fares better but she feels a bit miscast as well. Too bad, as this could have been something special.

Dismal, dreary, wrong-headed romantic drama, with a dire lack of chemistry between its leads; Sturgess is as least passably convincing, though he is stuck with terminally unlikable (and in some cases unfathomable) character, but Hathaway is completely miscast as a Brit, and delivers a shrill, grating performance (with heavy-handed attempts to 'uglify' her in the establishing scenes). The conceit of only seeing 'One Day' of the year in the lives of this couple also presents a major problem,

The One Day format ultimately fails itself, as many of the days we are treated to, are full of the completely boring or outright unbearable characteristics of the two leads. Hathaway is miscast, Sturgess only passable. The "twist" is moderately successful, but still makes it worth seeing only as an exercise in the choices we make and how time affects them.

This film was as slow as can be, with no true conviction to be found in its story. I've never read the book, so I can't make the comparison, but this film certainly didn't make a case for checking it out.

A heartwarming and funny/sad story about two people, whose paths cross,*SPOILER*but they never realize they are meant for each other until it's almost too late.I cannot explain it,but this movie is definitely not typical as other romances. It concentrates on their emotional bond and shows how people can destroy their unique bond over some unimportant stuff even if they're meant to each other. The ending's touching.I don't know what to say else, but it moved me a lot and I really, really recommend it.

The "one day" format, apart from the date transitions that are usually very nicely implemented, is not that special at all (probably it was in the book). Anyway, it's a romantic drama that has ups and downs, it's ok while you watch it but nothing special. Correct.

Hybris to make a movie out of this amazing novel. It's hectic and without a chance to transform some of the great overservations and developments of the book. Cause Nicholls is responsible for the script as well, its safe to say, that at times its simply not a good idea to picturize a good book.

I love Anne Hathaway's performance as the young and responsible girl she always star. This love story shows the relationship of two friends with mixed relationships among the years in one day. You see how the characters evolve and grow as so their relationship and shows that love is never late. A stunning ending for people like me, skeptical about romance movies. One of the few I can digest as a love movie.
