Sextra-trashy variation on MARNIE with unseemly pretensions of respectability, limping through its mawkish paces and multiple perspectives with increasing tedium. Adjani does and shows everything for little to nothing. Which means it's still something.

A decent mystery desperately in need of an editor. Adjani is appropriately bewitching.

There's an awkward tone throughout the film, and there really is neither suspense or drama, though the film tries to achieve both.

The kind of movie you can't watch any way high. I know, I tried. So basically I watched this film twice, because the plot is way too confusing if you are not paying attention. Plot-wise, I'm not even sure if it was worth the effort. But then there is Isabelle Adjani, prancing around naked for what seems the majority of the film. Her character is a real psychoanalytic's dream.

This is quite a unique film, successfully mixing a sense of black, black comedy with heavy drama and acute eye on human behavior, even if it's all highly dramatized. The performances are uniformly sensational, with Adjani once again excelling.

Top badass moment? Elle using a yellow chainsaw (model unknown), up a ladder, to cut a large dead branch off an oak, wearing a summer dress and sandals. I guess not messing that up and severing your own leg or blinding yourself with sawdust is pretty badass. Other than that it’s all cycling, boules and horribly named discos, in this revenge gone wrong thriller about a nutty (but not in a good way) young woman. In the end it's all a bit too... French. 1 chainsaw, no cats or decapitations.

Once the films gets tired of showing Adjani in a state of near constant undress the dark mystery of the piano slowly unravels to be the film's main subject and honestly I was pretty hooked by then. Also of interest was the depictions of family life in semi rural France and it's jumbled history with the rest of the continent. Kind of plays as a tragedy film in similar keeping of Betty Blue and it's woman in distress.
