Well made, well acted thriller with a pre-skinny Billy Bob Thorton!

Great characters and great actors combined with a great script. Paxton plays a peace-keeping sheriff who manages to resolve small town problems with his charm, something he really sells (even when he's spouting off innocently ignorant racism). Thorton is fantastic as a hot-headed criminal with more pride than brains. Sadly the directing isn't up to the same level as the cast and script. This could've been a lot better with some sharper cinematography but it's still a great film regardless.

Having the cops get out ahead and have to wait for the criminals felt fresh. We get to spend equal time meeting all of the main characters on both sides of the law. There is an intimacy here, and spontaneous, shocking violence. I liked it.

Methodically crafted suspense thriller never transcends its apparent made for TV roots – there’s something a little too broad and sensationalistic about the characters (and one key character relationship in particular) that threaten to derail the film from time to time, however the compelling performances, and an effective sense of oppressive forebearing, help keep it more or less on track; the “manhunt in reverse” aspect of the screenplay is definitely the most interesting thing about the film.

A weird old slice of hot'n'sweaty Americana noir. This rag-tag bunch of criminals just up out of nowhere and start stabbing people and stealing their cocaine. Then we meet Bill Paxton's iconic hero sheriff, a man who can disarm violent hillbillies using only his wits. The stage is set for a showdown. Set genre to "seedy TV movie" and grab the popcorn. The key scenes are grisly and powerful but there's a lot of nonsense filler between them. Some great hammy acting and dated tropes in here too.

Never boring, but the events leading up to the finale are too unoriginal to deserve all the praise. The ending though, is brilliant.

Fairly generic but well made crime drama of two men and a woman on the run. The film does a good job building tension to the finale. Paxton is quite good and it is weird seeing Thornton with hair (even a ponytail).

A story about dreams had, lost and destroyed. A story without good guys. Even the happy go lucky wannabe LA cop has his past that bubbles to the top in a blood filled ending. He don’t know any better he watches TV I read non-fiction

Startling violence combined with slow burn and another fine performance from the late great Bill Paxton.

This is one of Bill Paxton's best starring roles. He is so good in this, even though his character's backstory makes him beyond redemption in my eyes while the film seems to disagree. I appreciate that it's kept morally ambiguous enough and that he's never let off the hook.

BlurayRip no MakingOff.

The intensity and depravity of the first scene in this movie is pretty wild. Don't think I've seen a film hit the ground running like that in a while. Also Paxton's arc was really unexpected and way more morally gray than I'd have thought.

Low-budget crime drama with higher-than-usual character interest. The good-old-boy sheriff, a solid family man, a breezily benign racist, a diplomatic peacekeeper who has not had to draw his pistol in six years in office, receives the mixed-race tandem of big-city homicide cops with all the enthusiasm normally reserved for Hollywood celebrities. ("Dale doesn't know any better," elucidates his wife. "He watches TV. I read nonfiction.")

A combination of Thornton's character-driven script and some truly excellent casting elevates this to one of the best crime films of the decade. A lot of the film is devoted to Paxton's energetic, jolly yokel bumping off the LA cops, and Paxton just walks away with most of the film. Thornton, in a super early role, is a wonderful balding, pony-tailed scumbag who makes a great contrast to Beach's quiet, intense psycho.

The beginnings of Billy Bob Thornton, pre-"Sling Blade", and a good excuse for Bill Paxton to show off his twang. Other than that it's a somewhat manneristic but passable, watchable modern-westernish crime drama. Not a great script by any stretch, but certainly more invested than your average 1990s American shoot'em'up.

This film accomplishes what Schwarzenegger's "The Last Stand" spent 100x the money trying to be -- tense, thrilling, heartbreaking. One of Paxton's best performances.
