Inconsistently effective J-horror that manages to cram in pretty much all of the stylistic & thematic tropes of the genre. Terror, guilt & anger of child-abuse & abandonment are backed by modern guilt & fear of technology, social networking & media exploitation. Ring a bell? Mimetic to the point of parody although I'm guessing that was intentional. Contrived & plodding, I was constantly wondering whether Miike was having me on which messed up the tone. Wonderful if totally ridiculous ending.

A real puzzler. Is it a derivative cash-in on the J-horror formula, or a subtle parody of the clichés? Without any evidence of Miike's intentions, I'm forced to choose sides. Do I laugh with Miike, or at him? I'm not a Miike expert but this seems too uncharacteristic of him NOT to be a joke. And even if it isn't, it's still a decent and somewhat compelling (and unusually comprehensible, except the ending) work of J-horror, despite its lack of originality.

An attempt to capitalize on the success of Ringu. OK, but Miike can do better.

O filme mais comercial de Miike tem seus bons momentos, mas como um todo é apenas regular. Se você estiver esperando encontrar o estilo de Miike nesse longa, irá se decepcionar.

I've no idea what happened here. So it was the girl all along? What was the purpose of the cellphones? And the ending???

Very interesting beginning of the Japanese horror. Fine effects. Story grows nicely, but looses a lot towards the end. Though the story is not the strongest link here, it's an enjoyable film.

I'll never stop admiring the transparent, and successful, attempt to scam the US film industry into making a remake of a film so paint-by-numbers, it has to be self-parody... It took Hollywood way too much time to realize how easy this formula is to rip off if you don't care about the art or folklore.

Miike Takashi's reflection of popular J-Horror borrows elements from Ju-On, Dark Water, Ringu and more to create a devilishly ironic thriller that packs as many scares as the aforementioned.

Like most of these recent J-horror titles, has both effective moments that rank in the highest of cinematic terror and moments that make you want to pull your hair out for being so damned campy and contrived. With another ending this would have been better (see: Dark Water).

Surpringsigly better than the sum of its forumulaic parts. Chilling, and better than a lot of films from the genre.

Ridiculous premise, but Miike films enough scary sequences that the movie is a payoff. The bony hand at the beginning alone is enough for me.

A decent and well shot Japanese horror movie that gives you all the common tropes with a slight twist towards the ending. Ah yes, the ending: What the hell...?!

Yet another "long-haired female ghost sends cursed item through a chain of victims" J-horror movie, this one seems determined not to tread on unfamiliar ground. The one part that has potential to be interesting is the involvement of a TV crew -- but this idea is dropped without explanation as soon as it's no longer needed. I don't know if Miike is playing it straight or going for satire/genre study -- how would you tell?

Seriously, the worst attempt at making a remake of a Japanese Horror film (and wow, there are many failed remakes from Japanese horror films... just so you know)

If taken as a spoof to the current crop of J-Horror then it's a decent black comedy. If taken seriously however then it's a waste of time and easily Miike's worst film. The low rating stems from the fact that I'm not sure which one it's supposed to be.
