The film is told entirely in retrospect, from a veteran of the American Civil War who may already be executed. During the war, his job was to play music for a general who decided, in the soldier's words, "where hundreds of men would die." He has come home from the war skeptical about the meaning of life (or even that there is a meaning), and trying to search for answers. (wikipedia)

A macabre story with the familiar dry performances and one-liners Wright is known for, which are very funny. There are some interesting philosophical points brought up, but they're not confined to the narrative efficiently enough, resulting in the film side-stepping to a number of different tangential stories. Feels similar to Woody Allen's films of the '70s (namely Love and Death), but the marriage of humour and drama is not as well executed here.

Perhaps one of the most inexplicably bizarre things I have ever seen. I can't quite say that I truly either liked or disliked it. It may need to be seen again, but I can say it did have some moments of glorious humor from the insanity of Steven Wright.

So confusingly strange and surreal that it's hard to form an opinion on. It's impossible to dislike this short film with its well realized vision and captivating atmosphere but knowing exactly what to make of it is a bit of a challenge.
