I enjoyed it quite a bit. Not Pixar's finest, but still perfectly entertaining and heartwarming nonetheless. The animation is still exceptional as well as the voice acting. I liked seeing these two on a "quest" through a modern civilization that use to be magical. I found the end to be very touching, and there are plenty of laughs and funny situations that keep the pacing level. Definitely give it a shot if you like Pixar.

This sits comfortably between Big Hero 6 and Inside Out for me. While it doesn't reach the emotional highs of some of its contemporaries, the excitement of new, original Disney/Pixar IP is hard to ignore, and I'd be lying if I said that this didn't get to me in a few spots later on. It's an engaging story, wonderfully voice-acted, and even if there might not be other territory to mine in this universe, Scanlon's deeply-personal love letter to the events of his past stands strong on its own.

A stellar addition to the long list of "Disney Movies with Dead Parents". From Bambi to Lion King, Disney has been capturing and manipulating emotionally vulnerable audiences for generations, and let's not kid ourselves, who isn't emotionally vulnerable in this day and age? Now, *that's* a business model you can count on! On a completely different note, fantasy fans will be thrilled, Disney does the genre justice.

This wasn't quite working for me until the last act, which I loved so much that it kind of redeemed the whole thing. My issues were that the movie was fairly unfunny and too plotty. However, the emotional beats in the film's final twenty minutes that basically amount to two tear-jerking moments that are surprising, smart, and made me cry. I absolutely love what Scanlon does here, so much so that, despite my qualms, I'm willing to give Onward an enthusiastic - if caveat-laced - recommendation.

Eh- you know, lazy fantasy film/quest endeavors have it where the way you succeed is more by accident than on purpose. And this has some of that, succeeding by accident. No villain to speak of, just a family, missing its dad, and never mind the chaos and destruction on the way as long as you appreciate each other at the end, am I right? So- awful, no, but in Pixar's lower half, definitely.

The quest is disappointingly mundane (hitting all the expected beats alongside uninspired jokes and a bland setting), but its fruition is exceptional. An ass-kicking mom, genuine sentimentality, beautiful subversion—it's lovely and very touching. So, a mixed bag, but the ending unquestionably makes the rest worth it.

Lovely •Initial D&D world build: superb ? Never quite so good again but FUN •Scored 4 own terms, not high art •Not hidden adult level/jokes. Laughed lots + even gasped times when situ = risky tho, logically, is daft when?? this type of film? So must've really sucked me in & swept me along (Vodka helps) •Pratt plays himself but V amusing •Disney Parent Trauma™ staple: fairly effective ? •Mood lifting, guileless & delightful? Def recco 4?? we need?

Onward has good action, fun setpieces and gags, brushes the surface of emotional depth with a couple fresh takes, and rips through this mystical world at an excellent pace. I was caught up in it and enjoyed the ride, but once it was over it's all too easy to walk away and forget it. While we might expect more from Pixar, I'm not gonna be too down on a piece of entertainment that...entertained me

As is now expected from Pixar, "Onward" is fantastically watchable and the animation is great. We're at the stage now where even Pixar's weakest productions are ONLY good. I'm sure this is another one that will easily cross over to from the current younger generation, to their children. Kid's movies are heritable like that.

I liked the ending for sure because, as Pixar tends to do, it has a nice emotional punch while still feeling satisfying. However, Onward is too exposition-heavy and MacGuffin based to feel as fresh as most of the studio's other original films tend to be.

These days I watch lots of movies in multiple sittings due having 3 young kids, and I was feeling pretty disappointed at the halfway point of this one. It's colorful, Pratt does his best Jack Black impression & Holland is fine, but the script is full of weak cliches. However, I do feel it was saved from being grouped in the worst tier of Pixar movies (Cars 2, Good Dinosaur) by some extremely emotional moments in the last 30 minutes.

Whilst this may be a new setting for Pixar, ‘Onward’ ticks just about every Pixar-box throughout its runtime. It’ll manipulate every last tear right out of you... not me though cos I’m a total fucking bro... and it does fantasy well. It deserves credit for following through in its last act, good voice work and unsurprisingly fantastic animation. It's not challenging Pixar’s best moments, but it’s still very decent indeed.

You can really tell how deeply personal this one is. Pixar almost always hits you hard but this one got me really bad, and I enjoy how it didn't take an easy road but giving us the exact happy ending that most people would expect. Still a touching ending, but just different. Besides that it's fun but the ground it covers is not as good as some other Pixar: it's not as funny as some, not as exciting as others, etc. Still a great flick, though admittedly it was a 75 until I was hit with feels.

The fantasy/contemporary world design was a lot of fun, and the older brother felt like a nice departure from character archetypes. There was also the characteristic Pixar emotion. It doesn't ever draw you in the way that Pixar's best movies do and the plot felt a little too procedural, but this is still a fine film.

This is a little low for a Pixar score, so I have to express a little disappointment with Onward. It's not bad by any means, but Onward plays like an animated movie that relies more on its voice cast than it's true reason for existing... which is... I'm still not sure. What plot revolves around the father is truly touching, and as usual the animation is INCREDIBLE, but the next time Pixar chooses an employee's DnD campaign to animate, I hope they choose one with a little more emotional oomph.

Hits a lot of the familiar road trip story beats but the Americana x magical fantasy setting is a unique one (gorgeously animated) and provides a good share of memorable moments (most notably Guinevere's heroism that had me in tears). The real gem of the film though is the last act featuring good ol' (dragon-conquering) Mom and a completely unexpected, incredible, beautiful, heart-wrenching emotional climax (not the sweet but on-the-nose journal writing flashbacks but the silent view from afar).

Onward is an enjoyable film that doesn't do anything new, but does do a few things well. Fantasy that is too close to modern life tends to disappoint me, but Onward manages to do a decent job by focusing on its singular quest. This drive, sans a MacGuffin villain, allows time to explore the relationship between the brothers which is the crux of the film, and the aspect done best. The universe does feel a little half-baked, but it's still endearing. The voice acting is good, and not distracting.

Surprisingly good: funny, well-paced, and laced with some warmth. Onward sets up a few nice ways of revealing its brotherly dynamic; how pride and a lifetime of shared experiences and growth come together. The little "screw up" was handled nicely too, in that the absolute denial showed a different kind of respect and love... Just nice!

(Rewatch: not that heartfelt) It took awhile to get started, though I was mostly disappointed with the first act given the great universe building in the prologue. Would have liked to see more mom and manticore. Nice switches from tropes of older jock brother and ending with reconnecting with dad. At first I thought this might be another Pixar movie left in the dust ( The Good Dinosaur, Monsters University), but after a second viewing, I actually really loved it. As well as all the other Pixar movies, It's really well made and beautifully animated. The story was pretty original and charming, as well as the voice acting. I actually really enjoyed the comedy and inside humor for nerds. It's wouldn't be a Pixar movie if you don't feel like crying by the end of it. Would definitely recommend!

It's a fun to tell kids and some clueless grown-ups how gentrification can ruin even a magic-built world. Pretty by the numbers Pixar film whose main themes have already been explored in better stories -- Coco meets Weekend at Bernie's or something. Still cute how sometimes it takes a while to acknowledge to appreciate the living who are around us instead of the dead who've already gone. Love the stone dragon and the final 5 minutes deliver what the rest of the lazy climax just could not.

There's a lot to like here, particularly the feel of adventure. But as many others have noted, this is good movie that falls short of Pixar's usual greatness. If I had warmed more to the two main characters, the ending might have convinced me that the film wasn't too far off from achieving said greatness. Ultimately, though - even despite peculiar elements such as a fantasy take on 'Weekend at Bernie's' - there's something a bit too "made to order" about the whole thing.

Pixar has set the bar for animated storytelling so ridiculously high that it sometimes fails to precede the legacy and standard it has set for the entire industry. Onward is not a bad movie by any stretch of imagination, not even mediocre - if not by Pixar's own standards. I'd dare say this one still has more SOUL than its release year rival, as the ending in Onward was far superior and I connected with the characters better.

Aside from its inventive setting of modern day fairy-tale characters, this animated tale doesn't exactly tread new thematic material. However, just like most Pixar films, its the clever details and the earnest performances that give it charm and heart. Chris Pratt stands out for me with a silly, but honest performance that really shines during the film's emotional conclusion. Maybe not Toy Story territory, but it's still a cut above most animated releases.

Last 15-20 minutes or so are pretty nice and satisfying, but the modern monsters and road trip frameworks both play a little generic by Pixar standards. I’ll give Disney credit for lighting a few hundred million bucks on fire by shuffling this one from theaters to Disney Plus in a few weeks.

Dead parent is the entire plot impetus- classic Disney. It's pretty much as mediocre as everything Pixar has done since Toy Story 3, except that this also has Chris Pratt's insufferable obnoxious self in it. His goofyness was amusing in GotG, but he overdoes it by about a million percent here, and he's spent the last few years oversaturating the market.

Re-rating this for my second viewing. I enjoyed this quite a bit more the second time around. It still doesn't reach the heights of some of the best Pixar movies, so it feels a little underwhelming in some areas, but it's still fun. That said, I do wish they would have leaned a little more heavily into the mythological stuff, as the movie felt a bit too much like a typical road trip with little bits of magic here and there.

The 2 most notable things right off the bat are that this is movie is unbelievably ugly, and the voice acting is extremely poor. Other than that it's just a poorly done coming of age story in a very disappointing "fantasy" world. Trust Pixar to come out with original stories and use animation in a way that there's no way you could have done a real movie. Not one of Pixar's best efforts but not as bad as, say, The Good Dinosaur. A standard quest adventure wrapped up in medieval parchment. As always with Pixar, the animation is gorgeous. This is a slick, fun film with two great merits in particular: the basic set-up - this is a fantasy world become modernised, suburbanised, and disenchanted, in which the magic of technology has superseded actual magic and the myths and legends of yore are experienced mostly through boardgames, tacky theme restaurants, and the like - is funny and clever; and Chris Pratt is great as the irritating but loveable older brother.

In my view, the magic of Pixar hasn't been seen for a number of years so it's ironic that Onward itself is concerned about a world where the magic of old has been forgotten. Onward is relatively straight forward in its story but will probably appeal more to those who can relate to the main characters and their familial relationships as well as have a deep love of D&D. For the rest of us, this plods along without any surprises but entertains sufficiently and better than most recent Pixar efforts.

Noble Pixar effort has a good cast, with Holland and Pratt sparring well off each other, but story elements are frustratingly run-of-the-mill and too obviously cribbed from better efforts (I think the well has run dry on dead parent stories now hint hint!) Film can never quite get over the decidedly strange manifestation of the dead parent, especially when nothing is done with it as an idea, except for a few weak riffs on WEEKEND AT BURNIES. Watching this only confirmed my suspicions that a company once known for churning out classic after classic are now barely recognisable from other once lesser studios (elevated in rank only due to a lack of competition). Normally Pixar nail it with their unique little concepts, and while Onward does have a great premise (a fantasy world where magic has been lost to science), it's packed with cliches and cheap laughs, only occasionally hitting on something akin to the original Pixar magic.

It has an inventive premise that melds teen angst and grief with an exciting world of magic inside an already magical, catchy setting, it is engaging throughout, particularly suspenseful at times and occasionally downright hilarious, and it features very strong performances (Pratt and Spencer arguably steal the limelight) and of course great animation. The finale is very moving too in a profoundly effective way that screams Pixar; the characters grow/unfold, and that's the film's ultimate focus.
