It gets a lot of hate apparently but I find the hate to be most undeserved. It's not quite as good as Dances with Wolves but it's still superb in it's own right. Robert Duvall, Annette Bening and Kevin Costner all give great performances. It starts off appropriately slow but the gunfight at the end is certainly one of the best in western movies I've ever seen. "You the one that killed our friend?" "That's right, shot the boy too and I enjoyed it." BLAM! Best way to start a gunfight.

Costner did it again! He should stick to western and baseball, there he is always at his best. And, of course, he should direct more often.

A well-rounded cast, a believable partnership between Duvall and Costner, and some great gunfights add up to a very solid Western, if a bit too lovey-dovey by its final minutes.

This is not only a great western, it's a great film. Once again, Costner shows his affinity to this genre, and once again he's hired only the best to bring the story to it's glory. Also has one of the best shoot-out sequences I've seen in a long time...

(100 Westerns Project #2:) Open Range is clearly the work of a man who has great love for the old golden age westerns and hews closely to their feel and style and simple story structure. It's not super innovative or anything but Costner and Duvall do fit the genre nicely and the closing shootout is exactly the kind of thing you watch this genre for.

Something about Costner in the wild west brings out the best of him. Duvall and Bening do a fantastic job as well. Probably the best Western of the 21st century so far. The scenery will make you feel like you are a cowboy; very beautiful.

Yeah, Costner is a bit wooden in his delivery (as usual), but this is really Duvall's movie. Great characters and clever dialog flesh out a fantastic story that ends with a protracted and incredibly violent pitched gun battle in the streets.

I don't like westerns. I generally find them too boring and predictable. But Open Range is somehow different. Maybe it's the unusually high production value, or that Costner and Duvall are so natural as cowboys that it doesn't seem like they're acting. Or that despite a less-than-quick pace, the characters are interesting enough and there is enough happening that you don't get bored. The fantastic gunfight certainly helped as well. Hopefully there will be more westerns like this.

After a few stinkers in the 90's, I've ventured with trepidation to anything directed by Kevin Costner. But I was surprisingly pleased by this effort and dare I say, it is better than Costner's magnum opus Dances with Wolves.

An enjoyable western with a good heart and a view toward protecting those things that matter most. Costner captures the countryside in all its beauty. However the film is just too long. It needs to drop a couple of its endings and avoid meandering quite so much in the first hour. Costner also needs to temper his desire to overdirect scenes; he needs to let them breathe. And some of the dialogue was a bit too pat. The film is still enjoyable, but it really could have been excellent.

"Open Range" sets off as a decent small-scale film and doesn't feel like it's got actual prospects, but in the process somehow turns into something a bit more profound - thematically close to celebrated westerns, with truly stunning photography and culminating in a fascinating final fight. Unfortunately, the large duration and Kevin Costner's mediocre performance and direction drag it down quite a bit.

Western fans, Open Range is must-see viewing, especially given the dearth of films in the mostly dormant genre for the past few years. Even people who aren't prone to liking westerns will probably enjoy it for what it is, a movie about standing firm in what you believe and doing what's right even if the odds seem insurmountable.

Excellently lensed especially in the bucholic opening arc There's a lot of praise for Duvall but I really think his performance in 'Lonesome Dove' (an absolute classic to be fair) is better. Here, he (& all players) are hampered by a generic feel tale, awkward vocalisations & plotholes...& that romance subplot, -yuk! It'll rightly keep you watching but it won't really engage. The much praised shootout the film builds to, tho realistic in what a bullet can do, was, for some reason, a bit hohum.

Feels like Costner is attempting a much slower, stodgier version of UNFORGIVEN – there is some great use of spectacular scenery, and if Bening is ultimately redundant, she is given a rare opportunity to genuinely glow which is much appreciated; Costner is too granite jawed where maybe a roguish Mel Gibson would have worked better, while Duvall gives a masterclass in stealing a film with an effortless grace. A shame the film moves so slowly, and studded with too portentously poetic dialogue.

Viewed April 23, 2021. Kevin Costner's old man western, about a couple of cowboys who seek revenge on a corrupt land baron. The pacing is very deliberate, frustratingly slow at times, but it makes good sense when you get to the film's protracted final gunfight. Costner's old-fashioned sentimentality is mostly a virtue, his eye for grandeur complementing his interest in low-key character moments.

The plot is slow to build up initially and the main nuisance I found with it were the scenes featuring torrential downpours, in which a lot of dialogue is spoken, as the noise of the rainfall made it harder to follow. I thought Annette Bening gave a good performance while both Robert Duvall and Kevin Costner also gave good performances. There's some pretty decent, sometimes thought provoking; if not insightful, dialogue. The final 'showdown', as it were, was very good - I thought it was gripping

Costner's classicism is a double edged sword in his best work since his salad days. His commitment to tradition results in a well mounted western built on sturdy foundations, but it also acts as a constraint, especially in its dull romantic subplot and the desire to offer a neat resolution to the conflicts it presents. Some of the dialogue is also bad, but it's well filmed, and Costner's natural chemistry with Duvall is palpable; and the explosive action packed finale packs a serious punch.

Pretty good western themes and the action scenes, when they come, are top notch, but even though the slow buildup is effective it could lose 10 or 15 minutes without missing a beat. That aside, I enjoyed the way it takes mostly predictable beats and adds just enough of a twist to them to makes things exciting.

Costner tries his hand at representing the notion that America is the land of freedom, and that the real freedom, and hence the real America, was that which existed before the final settlement of property rights within the enclosed spaces of emergent capitalism. Effort is made towards resisting and countering some generic clichés, but others are embraced without question. Ultimately, the filmmaker's desire to please and impress a mass audience with his old-fashioned big-time spectacle wins out.
