What a waste of celluloid. When your 3-hour dialogue-heavy film gets drowned nearly every second by its music score, that’s a sign you were anything but confident about your story and characters to begin with. I wouldn’t have been bothered by this if Nolan had an Aaron Sorkin-esque talent for writing dialogue, but we all know that’s not the case. My score also directly reflects my annoyance vis-à-vis Nolan’s arrogance and self-indulgence for using miles of IMAX film just to film people talking.

Barely made it through it, it felt painfully American. The best I can say about it is that it's well made and has good performances. There are a few interesting scenes, but do not justify the 3h runtime. I couldn't find anything insightful or fresh observed about the millionth tortured controversial male genius story. Every Japanese Gojira has more to say about Hiroshima. Twin Peaks The Return Part 8 is 1.000x better than this at talking about this topic.

A phenomenal film. I also heard what the actors were saying. I have no idea where so many others were coming from. A gargantuan biopic, and an epic one. I’ve not seen one of this scale in terms of cast and production. Great tension, fascinating drama and a protagonist that I even felt for at times. Murphy and Downey are amazing, but everyone else is great too. It did feel as long as it is at times, but I was throughly fascinated and very moved in the end. Harrowing, relevant filmmaking.

A half-decent director could have made something utterly fascinating out of this piece of history. Nolan, on the other hand, creates essentially a 3-hour trailer, made of seconds-long scenes with only the tackiest, most manufactured lines imaginable. The cast is an unending torrent of great actors, and you can tell that the credited biographers wrote something complex and navigated potential pitfalls; only to be supplanted by Nolan's forced ridiculousness.

Disinterested in crafting an immersing experience with pace, Nolan opts to deliver a cliff notes summation of events, names, and political affiliations in order to fit a theatrical runtime. Make this 5 hours long, broken into episodes, you could have something really interesting. Here, you have flashes of There Will Be Blood, but mostly Social Network without Sorkin’s dialogue flourishes. Also, nude scenes so unnecessary it makes me wonder if it’s directed by a 12 year old.

His self-seriousness often comes off as insufferable pretension in some of his fictional projects but here the stakes are the fate of our world so this kind of spectacle filmmaking is exactly what you want from this story. Interesting angles are covered which I wouldn't have expected coming in. Visual fx are perfect to get into the troubled mind of Oppenheimer. Cillian Murphy’s hair in this film has a stronger narrative arc than some entire movies I’ve seen this year. This is very much Christopher Nolan’s The Wind Rises; an impassioned and devastating struggle with creation and its consumption by the hungry, foolish masses.

The best moments have it try to be this generation's JFK: a spanning epic about recent American conflict full of movie stars. And the portions involving Los Alamos and the creation of the bomb are riveting. But the opening and ending sections drag on for far too long. And it shows a few weaknesses of Nolan: namely that he shouldn't write political dialogue or film a sex scene. Still, it's loud, has one interesting philosophical argument, and could serve as a cool snapshot of history.

Not since Come And See did close-ups on a face haunt me. Nolan's bonkers casting choices are not a new thing (look at Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight, dude cast an attractive star with a smoulder that could melt the coldest hearts and altered his onscreen legacy forever with the Joker), but he got the best acting out of David Krumholtz and Benny Safdie yet, and even got something subdued out of Josh Peck.

Revolting. The mess made of the narrative robs the movie of any meaningful drama. What little engagement I felt was a result of the shitty, incessant action-movie score and the actors' strident delivery. It beggars belief, that a film about the development of the atom bomb could afford not one second to the reality of what happened in Japan. Instead, we get an hour on Oppenheimer's security clearance. What is this movie, but the logic of the bio-pic, taken to its fascist, egomaniacal end?

Follows the Nolan prescription: generating affect by using a slowly-moving camera, frequent cuts, ominous score, having actors underplay. Problems develop between being a persecution story and a self-persecution story, and the increasing focus on Strauss starts to seem a bit ludicrous. The whole thing drags out just in order to say…what? The filmmakers seem unsure: letting the audience decide is fine, but it feels like a cross between a school textbook and an exercise in fancy movie mechanics.

As a self-contained work, it's excellent, an exploration of mid-century modernity. The cinematography, nuanced narrative, historical detail, acting, direction, etc. It lacks in editing and could have played up the significance of Communism. However, the failure to *SHOW* the hundreds of thousands killed in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, no matter how masterfully critiqued otherwise by the film, is IMO a whitewashing of history and an apology for crimes against humanity. The world can never forget.

Maybe it was possible to combine both but the emphasis on Robert Downey Jr.’s character is off and seems less important compared to everything else going on. Film is an art and the use of music or silence to drown out speech is a deliberate choice to peek into Oppenheimer's psyche. I wish we had better developed characters/bonding. I'd have liked the final act more if I hadn't assumed the movie would end with the (underwhelming) Trinity Test. Fav scenes: Matt Damon; stepping on charred corpse; not showing Hiroshima slides.

Fundamentally flawed. Even those who love this leave feeling sick, but that's all this film has: callous disregard and purposeful ignorance. It's purposeless - and also, it's boring! Because it turns away from the actual victims to make you feel all torn up about poor baby Bob, it has no stakes. He'll lose his clearance? He'll lose the reputation he occasionally uses to whisper "Uh don't make bigger bombs pls" before cowering behind his guilt in silence? I don't give a fuck! What an awful movie.

Murphy's towering performance makes the film. Letting Downey Jr. and the conventional political witch hunt angle share the spotlight instead of delving more into ethical dilemmas is a mistake but the editing somehow render that acceptable. As some brilliant moments (Oppenheimer being applauded and the ending) make abundantly clear, though, focusing exclusively on the considerable emotional fallout for Oppenheimer would've made for a devastating drama rather than a mildly gripping history lesson.

By many metrics, this film was great, but I'm getting tired of Nolan's style. Films need variations in intensity just like paintings need variations in contrast. The ability to produce vibrating levels of anxiety for more than three hours straight is an impressive technical feat, but Nolan needs to learn another trick. That one is both hard to watch and getting old.

Disappointing. Great cast selection, but the structure of the story is frustrating. Constantly switching from the "present" to the "past". Characters being thrown around and about without ever getting to know them and why they matter. Mumbled important dialogue making me wish the movie theater had subtitles. Scenes cut short by an assault of obnoxious visuals and sounds. The Trinity Test was underwhelming. I didn't want anything over the top or crazy, but it looked like an oversized gas fire.

Nolan has adapted a non-fiction book and it shows. Oppenheimer is an audiovisual marvel, with some fantastic setpieces, weighted down with a script that comes with 50 pages of footnotes but no clear narrative core. I had an easier time telling the Kens apart than the 137 different physicists and politicians here. For a movie 3 hours long, it spends remarkably long just telling us stuff that's happened offscreen; for a movie talking about Prometheus, remarkably little time talking about effects.

Does classic pop science/history bits like furious blackboard scribbling, 'can you explain that in english?' guy, hamfist Einstein cameo - oh, and that junior senator's name? John F. Kennedy. Forrest Gump was there too! The story begs the question of why it spends so much time on Strauss only to tell us that he isn't that important after all. What's he in half the movie for then, is he stupid? Newfound insignificance in the atomic age? As per Nolan, cross-cutting obfuscates a first watch.

Watching a Nolan film reminds me of the gold rush; you spend hours panning through the detritus of loud unnecessary sound and light effects, portentious music, corridor walking, multiple time lines and annoying flash editing just to try to sift out the nugget of a decent story. Good acting and a gripping build up to the bomb test doesn't overcome the feeling you are left with (apart from the ringing ears) that it all could have been so much better without all the gimmicky cinematic silliness.

I was so bored watching this bloated mess. The structure sucks with the film jumping all over the place. It is sometimes hard trying to figure out what year we are in (the Senate stuff is in black and white with the rest being in color. Of course, the black and white stuff is easy to know what year we are in but not so with the color footage. Also, the bomb test explosion was underwhelming. I actually liked the last hour of the film more than the two hours that preceded it.

It's terrifying to watch human beings, mortals, literally build Armageddon; and never before has thunderous applause sounded so much like the end of the world. Nolan is a limited filmmaker, one who has leveraged his considerable skill into several great films, but one who can't grasp through this medium the full breadth of human experience. That means this film has to fundamentally be about folly, about Oppenheimer barely understanding himself more than the people watching him on screen.

Seeing Murphy's portrayal of a man who smashed Pandora's Box open with a crowbar was appropriately haunting. Gary Oldman as Truman cameo was incredible as well. It does suffer from typical Nolan annoyances (fairly bland female characters, archetypical characters, not the greatest writing or dialogue and convoluted plotting), but it also features Nolan's strengths (such as magnificent visuals, mostly immersive sounds and interesting subject material). All in all worth experiencing and better than I had expected. A not too typical Hollywood biopic, which is nice to see.

Watched this as Christopher Nolan intended -- in my home, split into two separate viewings, with a few breaks in-between. There's a scene where Oppenheimer sounds exactly like Robin Williams that I had to rewind a few times to make sure. I think this film is fairly pro-Oppenheimer, but it does offer enough space to let the viewer reflect whether this sentiment is correct. When (name redacted) launches an attack on his character at the end of the film, it is not entirely baseless.

Best Nolan movie in a while. A massive cast where everybody, even the bit parts, give their all. Murphy was quite good here and I always love Blunt. He shows why he's a great director, using shots and ideas that a lesser director wouldn't even think of. His creative choices haven't always worked, specifically with dialogue, but I didn't find it egregious here. But what impressed me the most was how 3 hours flew by. It really came across like a thriller, even though it's just talking.

I had such high hopes, a history of a scientist leading in an incredible project with worldwide consequences and huge personal moral issues done by Nolan who did Interestellar. The project, the scientist or the human angle are fascinating, but instead we got the law/political side with communist accusations, what a waste. The writing is so lazy that we have three timelines and two of them are not interesting at all. Some bits are interesting and well done, but I would not watch it again.

The Los Alamos part of the film was brilliant (with the arguable exception of the -let's be fair- underwhelming climatic detonation), and Nolan's approach to decades-spanning biopics initially feels fresh and energetic. But ultimately the *two* framing narratives end up sabotaging the whole thing, feeling both too extensive and fairly insignificant contrasted to the almost completely omitted "these are the consequences of your actions" aspect of him becoming the Destroyer of Worlds.

I liked Oppenheimer, but I didn't love it. I left the cinema feeling that it was an important film to see, but more because of the story it tells and not because of how it tells it. The acting is very good, and it is a beautiful film to behold, but it has pacing issues that detracts from the overall experience. Sound design in certain scenes is excellent, and I'm glad I saw it in the cinema for those scenes alone. As a whole, though, Oppenheimer might have worked better as a limited TV series.

This left a lot of the conversation feeling quite stilted. I'll echo another reviewer's comment that Twin Peaks S3 ep8 did a much better job of realising the horrors of nuclear war

Just after leaving the theater, I wondered how many Oscars this film could win. It's 18. Definitely exceeded my expectations. For a 3-hour film, being this moving and interesting all the way, with focusing on different chapters of history, it's quite an achievement. Most importantly, it's an incredible character analysis. From his love of physics to his psychological troubles, from his paving the way for one of the deadliest weapons in world history, to his ambiguous political views.

Making a Hollywood movie about physics is like dancing about architecture. It's just a mismatch of form and content and what you get is a mess of complexity boiled down to bumper sticker slogans which are then driven into the ground as if to bludgeon you into submission. The characterizations are pat and one dimensional, the dialogue is on the nose (Kitty: "The brat is asleep. Where are the martinis!") and the whole affair has the leaden air of prestige white elephant art.

Nolan is not directing here but rather conducting, turning a pensive three hour character study into a cinematic symphony using all his signature flourishes. Nolan isn’t known for his dialogue, but I think the charmingly old-school banter here is the secret weapon that makes this so entertaining. Still unsure how Fission and Fusion interlink thematically.

An odd film. I liked the cast. The tale was interesting, although some story choices added nothing. The film got close, but seemed to pull back from making us really feel the true horror or scale of what was going on. Some parts felt extraneous. Having so much music over so much of the dialogue was an odd choice - it made it feel like a trailer or a montage in parts. That said, it was often gripping, and made with some care. Interesting. I'd probably watch it again.

From start to finish the directing and editing create a panting effect that screams urgency, but because of the poster and the premise it's obvious that we're about to watch a devestating chapter in the history of science, warfare and politics so isn't the urgency clear already? Maybe it mirrored the turmulent inner world of Oppenheimer himself but it that case it should've stayed on his skin continuously, which it didn't. + 5 for depicting the first atomic explosion ever without sound.

Bad editing made for a TikTok audience rich in attention deficit. The first two hours are almost unbearably boring - hectic editing and every scene is explanatory and destroying the "show, don't tell" rule. The latter half picks it up with two notable scenes: Oppenheimer being stripped naked in front of his wife and inquisition, and the sickening play with human lives by the elites. Shame the filmmakers were cowards, no courage to show the consequences, but we had to look at Murphy's face.

Packed with dense expository information (par for Nolan's course), this is a generally compelling (and physically impressive) experience, even if there comes a point where Nolan's penchant for tricky, time-jumping storytelling becomes frustrating, especially if you find Murphy's commanding performance chilly and remote. Nolan doesn't utilise his stacked cast in a way that aids his storytelling, though it's heartening to see Downey fire back to life in a genuinely impressive supporting turn.

Oppenheimer can be thoroughly engrossing when it's firing on all cylinders, but the script has some major shortcomings, mostly in the character department, and I quite disliked the editing (which means it will certainly be nominated for best editing, and probably win), especially the editing of the countless montages. I’m beginning to think that Nolan works double on the editing and sound design in order to avoid character development. He rarely leaves the audience with a great knowledge of character’s inner thoughts, and here, we are deliberately distanced from Oppenheimer so that the doubt in his mind could be manifested. Unsuccessful in there, however for me, it’s Nolan’s best in the past 10 years. He has completely become a Hollywood director.

I guess this was the only way to make a 3h biopic watchable for the ADHD riddled modern audience, but what an unnecessary mess. The subject is fascinating and Murphy is excellent but where is this masterpiece critics are selling? This movie is so hyper-kinetic, it never lets any scene breathe. I would have much rather spend 3h on the Manhattan project and JRO moral dilemma and left McCarthyism to its own movie.

This was the beginning of my childhood End Times story and I found this telling of it weirdly anti-climactic. To center the narrative so rivetingly on Oppenheimer drains the development of the A-bomb of its significance for all us non-Oppenheimers (aka Everybody Else). I felt like an ambivalent, side-lined cheerleader. Yay, Bob, you go.

[SPOILER ALERT!] Starts a bit lame with too much dynamic editing late-Malick-wannabe style. Fortunately it gets better and better with great middle act about Los Alamos culminating with best scene of the film which paradoxically is not bomb ignition, but surreal Oppie's speech about Hiroshima. For a moment I thought this film will end up being brilliant, but unfortunately Nolan completely sinks it from there by uninteresting court/Strauss drama. Still worth a watch, but what a waste of material.

I mostly loved it. Gripping throughout, fascinating in its depiction of a singular and troubled mind, and technically masterful. I do think the intercutting timelines made it difficult to understand the stakes at any given time during the first two acts. By the third act, when the stakes had been crystallized, I still wasn't sure why Oppie's security clearance was all that important given that he was no longer working on the bomb. Still an excellent film and I look forward to a rewatch.

Oppenheimer is a mediocre film both as a biopic and by Nolan standard. Although Goransson's outstanding music and great cast added immersion to the story, I was tired of the unnecessary excess of time jumps. When I think about the editing, there were scenes that I wouldn't have missed if they weren't in the film. It was below my expectation. (Capitol Spectrum Cineplex - 08/05/2023)

Been slacking on my final rating on this one despite seeing it in 70mm IMAX at work several times now because I needed to hit a captioned screening but I’ve done that now and DAMN I do think this is Nolan’s best. While it does suffer from his usual issues - being too enamoured with Clever Men and ignoring women’s interiority - it’s also powerful and propulsive with a shockingly effective mournful tone and all-timer visuals, sound design, and editing. Cillian and RDJ are ridiculously good.

Evidently, Nolan, desperately, needed IMAX and non-stop music score(even during casual dialogues???) to make this movie watchable. The structure, especially at the ending(building up the twist), was too cliche/Hollywoody. The main character being portrayed as an angel, most dialogues being very mainstream, etc. classic Nolan stuff. It also felt like that C.Murphy was still playing Tommy, with the same gestures&mimics. Good effects, but that's not enough to make a good movie. Overall, alright.

There were some problems with the editing and overbearing music, but I didn't have as much trouble as other people seem to have. It was engaging enough throughout to get through the three hour runtime. I cringed at the JFK name drop.

Ultimately this movie doesn’t meet the expectation of spectacle you have from a Christopher Nolan. Decent as a biopic, but it wasn’t big enough. Should’ve shown the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, since it didn’t really have that much to say about anything. the actual bomb should have been a 10 minute sequence of crazy visuals. can’t believe that the first ever nuke test, as imagined by Christopher Nolan, felt underwhelming.

Amazing. Great score, with haunting synth. Fantastic cinematography. Nolan the best director for this. Murphy, well-suited. Incredible performances, some of the best by these actors: Nolan an even better director than I thought. Great storytelling, drama. I rewatched it and realised Nolan had dealt with Oppenheimer's martydom more intelligently than on first viewing, and many callbacks, as well as clever camerawork

An unsatisfying and problematic exposition of 20th Century inividual existentialism, rather than, very oddly, the actual political, social, moral historical issues of the A-bomb. These big issues aren't ignored, but that's what makes this such a puzzling film - what exactly is it's point? Purely a character analysis? If so - Oppenheimer as a personality totally fails to warrant the Shakespeare treatment. maybe more expressionistic visual form may have been more fitting.

Cillian Murphy kills it in his role of Oppenheimer. I was a bit fazed by the parallel stories (one in the "present" when Oppenheimer's security clearance is revoked and one in the past that recalls the story of the Manhattan Project). However both stories converge seamlessly. I'd say that 50% of my enjoyment of this movie came from Zimmer's soundtrack. An absolute blast.

While Murphy's acting was splendid, there's the big question of if this even needed to be this long. The movie is certainly dragged out in certain aspects. Cinematography can't be faulted. Maybe it's time for Nolan to face up to the fact that not every movie needs to be 3+ hours long. Also, for Nolan being praised as much as he is, how come German and Dutch speaking people understood nothing of the Dutch spoken line? That was neither Dutch nor German.

It's not the best picture of 2023. It's not even Christopher Nolan's best film. I don't want to dog on it super hard but I like "Memento" better than this. For a 3 hour movie, it moves fast. The dialogue scenes are cut quickly, it attempts to have Aaron Sorkin's fast, quippy dialogue, but it lacks charm, wit, and nuance. The movie is a bunch of people having conversations so important they have to talk quickly. It has interesting points to make about humanity and the bomb, but I won't rewatch.

How precise, Nolan's like the engineer of cinema these days. every shot is planned and taken with great details (not only cinematical, but also historical), those numerous emotions that were be portrayed. no space of film tape was wasted as the editor put every piece in the exact place. enormous amount of effort, I can't really imagine what went over this team in the production times! CILLIAN MURPHY IS NOW IN HIS RIGHTEOUS PLACE.
