Commissioned by the heads of the 2000 Cannes Film Festival to make an opening-night short commemorating cinema as it enters its second full century, Godard instead offers up a 17-minute barrage of re-edited footage of wars and Nazi atrocities, interspersed with clips of Maurice Chevalier in "Gigi" and Godard's own "À bout de souffle." the combination of piano music with a reverse-telling of history through the juxtaposition of world cinema and archival footage is very powerful and interesting. the narration, however, is awful.

A requiem for the 20th century, both the pinnacle and the nadir of the history of what we call humanity, as well as being the century of the cinema, in a not incidental way, this short cinematic essay exposes and interrogates those interconnections in a fascinating if nevertheless elusive way.

Interesting, but these phenomenological methods are what Descartes rightfully called building castles on sand. Even though Godard shows us patterns, these are probably mostly attributable to the fact that zooming out on any sort of chaos (e.g. pi) will eventually reveal any desired pattern. Some smaller interesting points or footage, but I remained largely unconvinced throughout. In other words, he is reaching, messy or possibly pretensious in some areas.

Godard makes a celebration of the history of cinema, and at the same time makes us ask ourselves why we are celebrating when the 20th century also brought with it so much pain, suffering and inhumanity via wars and atrocities related to them. Aesthetically beautiful which makes the occasional moments of ugliness stand out. A fascinating film.

Speaks so much to the power of cinema to excite and provoke while simultaneously likening it to other 20th-century developments, like fascism and porn where guys pee in girls' mouths. So I guess, in a way, it's Godard at his best.

30 dias de JLG - Filme #15: A origem do século XXI. Acho que dá pra falar com propriedade que esse é um dos melhores curtas já feitos, centrar-se na sentimentalidade proustiana para o fazer foi um tiro certeiro. DVDRip no MakingOff.
