It's extremely rare that horror movie can be so impossibly boring, generic, and un-scary that a year could go by and I watch it a second time without realizing that I had ever seen the thing in the first place. I told my girlfriend I watched this and she told me we watched it already. I was pretty embarrassed that I wasted an hour and a half twice on this crap.

We pan down slowly to the bottom of the shelf. There is a lone box. A loud chord strikes. Yahtzee.

Some effective jump scares are not enough to make up for the complete lack of actual tension or logic in this movie. The events that occur make very little sense if any thought is applied. Also, two of my favorite laughable horror movie cliches make appearances: the wise ethnic old person warning about the dangers of the evil spirits before immediately disappearing, and the evil ouija board. Hmmm, actually, this movie was probably doomed to sub-par mediocrity from the start.

Ouija is a terrible movie. It doesn't do a single thing right, is a downright bore for most of its running time, and is also an advertisement for a Hasbro board game. Its filmmakers apparently have no concept of what makes a horror movie scary, as there's no attempt to generate an atmosphere or suspense, and even the few jump scares fail to startle, much less frighten. The actors are bad, the dialogue is awful, and there isn't a single reason to watch this horrible movie.

As one might expect of a cash-in movie, this consists solely of a cookie-cutter screenplay threaded with jump-scares and Ouija/Apple product placement. I can't figure out Hasbro's endgame here. This film firmly establishes that their product doesn't do anything but summon malevolent spirits to kill people. Why the fuck would that make me want to go out and buy a Ouija board?

Ouija suffers from being typical horror fodder in the worst way. It has no stars in its cast, it's direction, while sometimes more than tolerable, is inconsistent. It's biggest problems, however, lie in its plot, which is so by the books, that there is literally nothing that can be done to help. All in all, it suffers from a bland cast, and no inspiration.

Stiles White's Ouija is completely void of scares from beginning to end, with horrendous writing and questionable production values acting as the final nails in the proverbial coffin.

The first act feels like a horror movie from the 90's. Pack every horror cliche and cast 30 year olds playing high schoolers. Than the movie becomes jump scare central as the characters test to see who can be the dumbest character ever created. Spoiler: All of them are dumb and shallow.

A film so by the numbers that it didn't hold my attention, and it doesn't help that the Ouija board stopped being frightening on its own a long time ago. There are rules when using the board that must be followed, some characters violate them, and bad stuff happens. It's all very boring, really. The writing doesn't surprise, and some performances, especially by supporting characters, fall flat. Before deciding to watch this, consult your local ouija. You'll know its broken if it says "yes."

Pretty bad, boring, and easily forgettable, Ouija is a horror movie with nothing original or interesting going for it. It kinda feels like Final Destination-lite.

Just awful. I can't really remember anything about it, other than how bored and annoyed it made me. Don't bother with it.

Ouija elicits the worst reaction a horror film can get: ambivalence.

I was hopeful when I initially heard that this movie was happening; a Ouija board is a simple starting point with rich potential and very easily could have lent itself to a fun story. What we got was lazy, genetic crap that plays like an empty teen horror failure from 2002. Watch Drag Me To Hell, Skeleton Key or The Craft instead.

Not awful, just mediocre. Using the ouija planchette as an eyepiece was new to me, but that's all...

I kinda dug this! Make no mistake, it's not a "good" movie, and there's a whole bunch of those silly, overused horror movie cliches, right down to "elderly ethnic lady who has the answers yet isn't sought out until 80 minutes in". But whether you want to admit it or not, this isn't all formula and no originality. The flick swerves you. It doesn't JUST depend on jump-scares. In the horror movie pantheon, this is a lot closer to "Blair Witch" than to "The Grudge". That's the best way I can say it.

Tries to be creepy, then gives up on that and goes back to having nothing of interest happen until the final act. Very frustrating movie, skip this one and watch the far superior prequel.

Actually not as bad as people say - I'd describe it as competently bland. Which is weirdly disappointing because if it was worse it would probably be a lot more entertaining.

Here we have yet another woeful byproduct of that much ballyhooed partnership between Hasbro and Universal Pictures. Because this is far from family board game fun at the Cineplex. (pluggedin.com)

I'm not even entirely sure this movie has a bad script so much as it's just very weakly directed, drawing flat and unconvincing performances from its entire cast in a film made up of weak, sterile lighting and camera work and editing and jump scares that would have elicited eye rolls in the 80s. It also might have a bad script too.

It's not just a terrible film wasting what could be a very different approach to teen horror. It plays by every rule we always see, with a group of youngsters investigating their friend's suicide only to find an old evil by trying to reach her. Once it is finally awaken, Ouija tries to blend Final Destination material with ~subtle~ jumpscares. Now that's shitty.

It starts off solid enough, despite the pretty goofy premise, but it proceeds to do absolutely nothing original with its ideas & follows the same lazy 2010's horror script as so many others before it. Lifeless & flat characters, some laughably bad dialogue in places & iffy acting to go with it, a half-baked backstory for the haunted board & an ending that neither makes sense nor ends things on a satisfying note all combine to create one of the most disappointing & dull horrors of recent times.

Something I appreciate about Ouija is the pacing, the opening shot is 2 girls placing the board on a table to play. It’s essentially a 90-minute Hasbro Ouija Board commercial, so it shies away from ever being TOO SCARY. The first act seems to do everything right (except there’s zero character development) and the set up feels near perfect, but as it goes on the plot holes widen into plot canyons and the scares become generic and tired. Fun for what it is, but nothing special.

Pretty bland, middle-of-the-road, ten-day shelf life horror film. It being "based on" the board game is ultimately inconsequential; this is ninety minutes of by-the-numbers spooky-goings-on. If you like jump scares, maybe you'll enjoy; I don't, really, so this had little to offer me.

A horror movie that really tries to be a horror movie by doing every stereotypical aspect that could come from a horror movie.
