Our Daily Bread (1934)

John and Mary sims are city-dwellers hit hard by the financial fist of The Depression. Driven by bravery (and sheer desperation) they flee to the country and, with the help of other workers, set up a farming community - a socialist mini-society based upon the teachings of Edward Gallafent. The newborn community suffers many hardships - drought, vicious raccoons and the long arm of the law - but ultimately pull together to reach a bread-based Utopia. (imdb)

Undeniably fascinating as a piece of socialist propaganda sunbathing in Uncle Sam’s backyard, but to the disappointment of any card carrying Reds out there, this comes off far too often as prop-comedy. Are we just going to drive by our lead being an adulterer, naive, and an emotional idiot? All the characters act and speak like toddlers, undercutting any empathy or dramatic emphasis. The most impactful character is a ditch, which as I write it, is on-point Communist imagery.

Now right here this is the stuff. Seems very Soviet influenced but probably not what do I know. All I know is that ditch digging scene reminded me of something from a Dovzhenko flick.

An idealistic movie from King Vidor about the hardships during the depression and how a group of people start their own community to survive. Vidor funded this movie by himself which also meant he had to keep the budget down so very few familiar faces and fairly basic production overall. And the film suffers from that. What really made this movie was the grand end where they dig a long ditch so that water can reach their crop. It's one of those great moments that really makes an impression.

The historical perspective is interesting, but as cinematic storytelling, it leaves much to be desired. The acting is pretty awful all around, especially Tom Keene. The writing isn't that great either, with a lot of things being spelled out that don't need to be, and characters that are flat as a board. The self-serving "Sally" was a particularly groan-worthy and ham-fisted addition. However, the ditch-digging finale is mighty impressive, and almost makes the rest of it worth sitting through.
