The Japanese pastoral is a style in itself, and when it's done right, as in Miyazaki or Ozu, its images of train stations, seaside restaurants, cherry blossom alleys, or backyard fireworks melt your heart. In its modest, unaffected, gentle yet serious way this is a modern classic of that style.

Perhaps we could say that emotions are not really states, but a dynamic process through which the finite, unfinished beings that we are weave the fabric of our relationships by negotiating the way our own limitations relate to the limitations of others. There is nothing easy about illustrating the way this process of coming to terms (of acceptance) operates, especially without showing major dramatic conflict. Here, all the big events happen offscreen, the better to show the small-scale shifts.

So beautiful in that gentle Japanese manner as 3 older sisters meet their young half-sister for the first time. Out of that a series of minor emotional outbursts that unites them as they tries to cope with their past parental issues. Actually the story feels so light that it's almost not there, but it's so lovingly done, becoming one of the sweetest experiences of 2015.

If you've decided to make a family melodrama and you want to pay homage to someone, it's tough to make a better choice than Ozu. Koreeda follows the master exceedingly well, and while much of his previous work fits into the family melodrama slot, this feels as much like Ozu as anything he's done--the centrality of the table, the train travel, the low angles, all put together with a quiet rhythm that serves as something of a counterpoint to the trials these characters face.

Familial affection utterly and unrepentantly affirmed. Few movies are as good-natured and comforting, and few directors are as capable of earning this sanguine appeal as Kore-eda, who writes characters with formative, lived dimensions. This depiction of a support system of which most can only dream would be remiss if the treatment were further from the ground, but this director's pedigree for a more inconspicuous dramatic style is known. Small plot, big feeling.

While I like the understated style, it's a quite by-the-numbers Japanese drama and overall it was a bit too sugary for me.

So much loveliness in the film; the film maintains a brilliant perspective which is always slightly distanced from any drama, slightly unconcerned with the events that cause hardships in the family unit, and deeply invested in how each of the characters perceive the effects of those events. The film is a wonderful viewpoint into the vital intersection of compassion, independence, and responsibility, and it is lovely to see a an exploration of generous, selfless, and rewarding commitment.

How lovely, I felt so at ease watching this pleasant tale where nothing is ever dangerous or at risk. It's simply about four women growing into their lives and supporting each other and profiting from the bond of love to resolve their problems and understand what matters in life. Well acted, beautifully shot in a quite idyllic location, I could have watched their stories for hours. Kore-Eda is one of the few directors who gets away with putting so few hard or negative feelings into his films.

There's something about Koreedas films that make them insanely watchable, and I don't mean that in a bad way.

The only serious conflict here is then mom of the three returns and the film gets a bit sincere about the relationships of each one of them with their father. The rest is a such a genuine, if irregular, collection of encounters, laughs, meals and moments of affection and restrained love.

This was just great and warm like a blanket of feelings and tender and it just made me wish I was adopted by the sisters. Just really lovely characters all around with a hint of melancholy, but also plenty of hope.

I've been accused by my friends of only liking dark or disturbing movies. This will be my counterexample.

I think it's in these more "standard" (for lack of a better word) stories where the overwhelming warmth of Koreeda's direction is most noticeable. You gotta love seeing an unexpected Yoko Kanno score.

Octubre 2016 - Bonica història, bella actitud, digna. Naturalesa, sensacions nues (què és aquesta nyonyeria?). M'ha fet entrar en aquest estat d'ànim i atmosfera.

Top badass moment? The film I watched before this was also Japanese, Mutant Girls Squad; they have absolutely nothing whatsoever in common with each other, a fact I can actually prove mathematically. The main characters in this movie are so pleasant and nice that I was in danger of self-harming in an attempt to rebalance my yin and yang, before they got so far out of sync the universe ceased to exist. 25 chainsaws, 456 decapitations and no cats. Just joking (except about the cats).

I love it how subtle and restrained Kore-eda makes the drama in this film about family: loss, regret and love. Being subtle and restrained doesn't, however, mean that 'Our little sister' was somehow dry, on the contrary it is filled with humor, warmth, and life. The subtlety lies in the dramatic devices utilized.

Probably a bit too long and sometimes meandering, but overall still very good and main character is v relatable

Nice & pleasant. But I just couldn't feel the internal struggle of the "little sister" carrying the burden of having her mere existence be a pain on everyone else. And the youngest of the original 3 was so cool! I can't believe they didn't develop her more (literally at the end the middle of the 3 dismisses her taste as strange and doesn't even give her a chance to answer the question that the other 3 were given time to answer. wtf?)

The comparisons to Ozu are clear and the conventional family drama set-up satisfying.

The most appropriate words to describe this film are charming and reassuring, but then again all the Koreeda films I've seen share these same qualities. One of those films that is devoid of tension almost to the point that you are made tense as you are waiting for something dramatic to happen (similar to something like 'Paterson' but that Jarmusch film is even more ambient). So many 'good' people in this movie, even a banker with morals! Sibling love can be a powerful force for good.

My favourite Kore-eda film so far. Storywise it's nothing special, but the sisters are interesting characters and their relantionship felt authentic. Their father is away but his impact remains in their lives. It's also a good looking film and captures the sense of time and location in a rare way.
