Our Sunhi

So is Sunhi just cruel and manipulative? No, she's lost, confused, and scared. Sometimes the cliche of "it's not you, it's me" isn't really a lie. Of course, here we see the blame for a failed relationship isn't something that should be separated into levels of responsibilities, it's just a thing that happens sometimes. Maybe his films just work because my heart is tender as ever, or maybe I just relate to a film that's about getting your professor to write a letter of recommendation?

As Sunhi returns to college to get a rec letter in order to study in US, Sang-soo uses precise long shots of talks about/with her, encapsulating despair, love and desire with disarming subtlety. The three drink-talk-walk with her trying to find themselves -- her ex is now a director, a senior director/her former teacher with nihilistic thoughts about life (he hates to go out) and the main professor. Love is great. Cinema is everything -- the friendly walk of these three proves it all.

Insightful, easy-going and occasionally very funny.

Our Sunhi could have been a great film, but Sang-soo Hong forgets to make the audience fall in love with Sunhi, and so it remains a puzzle why anyone would be infatuated with such a dull girl in the first place.
