As long as you take the naïveté of the victims in good humor, Out of the Fog (1941) has a plenty to offer. Quasi-noir with a touch of humor and a dazzling 'bad guy itch' performance from Ida Lupino. You get a feeling, deliberate of not, that a there is a tongue-in-cheek nature to the characters, sort of a mellow brutality to it all. Creates a odd feeling that sometimes hard to take, but it's a heartfelt crime story underneath with Thomas Mitchell having the biggest heart of all.

A group of New Deal Era stereotypes put on a good show in the service of a story that is less than the sum of its parts. Kind of worth a detour just for the performances and cinematography.
