Comparisons to Braveheart are inevitable, but this movie stands perfectly well on its own (though the historical inaccuracies don't even make sense within the movie's own internal logic). Chris Pine is stoic and subdued, which fits the material well, and the battle scenes are appropriately muddy, bloody, and rousing. And holy hell, does Scotland look gorgeous here.

I grew up in Scotland, so quite often enjoy its brutal history being portrayed on film. I suspect there were a few narrative flights of fancy taken here, and I think real depth was perhaps forsaken in order to get to the action. That said, it holds the attention, is well made, and it makes great use of location. Pine puts in a very measured and quietly charismatic performance, and gets the accent right. The score is similarly understated but effective. A decent companion piece to Braveheart.

From opening ten-minute continual shot to viciously kinetic final battle, an excellent historical epic. Perhaps a bit watery historically, it seems to suspend accuracy for straightforwardness, but it works.

Hits the sweet spot: grounded historical war adventure minus the boring bits. We forget it's Chris Pine, a lot of the time, he does such good work; the rest of the cast is adequate. The director's quite skilled at teasing tension out of situations, and entertaining action scenes punctuate throughout.

It’s interesting to see something like this debut straight streaming to your TV - twenty or thirty years ago a big glossy historical epic like this packed with battles and castles and horses and duels and epic vistas would have been a studio’s major theatrical release for a season. But times change! I enjoy this genre though so I was inclined to enjoy this.

Much like Braveheart, this account of the Scottish Wars of Independence plays extremely fast and loose with history, choosing to eschew telling the actual story in exchange for presenting a tasty feast of battlefield butchery. That being said, the battles are well filmed, the costumes and weapons are much more accurate to the period than Braveheart's, and Chris Pine's accent is miles better than Mel Gibson's. Once again however, all English characters are evil bastards or sniveling cowards.

A well done, generally accurate historical depiction, including the Battle of Loudoun Hill which was indeed 600 Scots vs. 3000 English.

Good costumes and fairly well written. It was an engaging and interesting story. Chris Pine and Florence Pugh were enchanting together. The fighting scenes were chaotic and overly drawn out. It was often hard to determine who was fighting whom. Huge cast. There were a few silly contrivances added to embellish the drama but it was mostly a nice walk through 14th Century Scottish history. Worth watching, but mostly due to the good premise and Pine's charismatic performances.

With incredible and lush photography, Robert the Bruce's story is a feast for the eyes. Add some very strong performances, and the film has strong potential. It is held back by, what feels like, a rush through its material. I have think that a limited series would have done wonders for this work

Really breathes life into the desperate struggle for control of Scotland.

It's bewildering that such a legendary folk hero was left overlooked by mainstream cinema for over a century. The high production values recreate the time period superbly, and though Pine is a left-field casting choice, he gives the Bruce a distinct otherness from his men that really works. Native Scot Mackenzie does well to avoid Hollywood stereotypes until the idiotic finale, where, for no coherent reason, Edward is defeated in single combat and freely permitted to flee the scene of battle.

Sometimes a bit too slow, unecessary torture porn and sex scene too long, but overall correct. I should mention that directing is good, and cinematography is very impressive at time.

Another failed attempt by Netflix. Hammy dialogue galore, wooden unimpressive acting, almost TV film like way of storytelling... For me it hit all the wrong notes. As in, any given GoT episode is much better than this abomination. A $120 mil budget, exqueeze me? Not worthy of my time and yours neither. Skip.

Hollywood gets hard for an underdog story so how is this the first proper Robert the Bruce movie? I feel robbed of a 20s Fairbanks one, a 40s epic one, a scrappy 60s one where 95% of the cast are badly dubbed Italians and a 90s garbage one that everybody hates but you and I secretly love.

Slow. Well made & acted Bound 2 be compared to Braveheart; far less stirring battles, hero action & soaring music etc. More contemplative & political, relationships focused Likely far more historically accurate --- Crazy busy ? - hope to fill in review (in detail) when have time. For now just score & maybe notes. Hope everyone is well & watching good stuff ?

OMG, this movie is so tragic. He loses so many battles and all hope seems lost. But damn it was still a very cool movie and I loved the soundtrack which carried it perfectly.

Douglas is high energy, tell you what. Chris Pine is alright in this. Seems faithful to history although skips a few things near the end. Liked some of the landscapes and the final fight was strong. Overall it was a bit anti-climatic.

A decent medival historical movie that was too bogged down by political posturing and drama to shine as the hack and slasher that I wanted it to be, but that's just me projecting.

This is one meticulously crafted film, full of rich period detail and blood-soaked battles with a lot of extras. I so admire the craft that went into it that I wish I liked the film more. Pine's performance is extremely reserved and his character so underwritten that I can't say I understand why he does much of what he does. After a series of nearly comically lopsided defeats, we are told that Pine's extremely small army is now winning, and honestly ... I have no idea why.

"Based on the untold true story". Scotland, 14th century. Robert The Bruce has been crowned King of Scotland. After a surprise attack, however, he is defeated and outlawed by the English king and his army. Cunningly and with great courage, he tries to regain power as he faces the much larger and better equipped English army.

Good guy Robert the Bruce does good things and is good to people, and is a hero, I guess, and does the thing at the end, lots of smiling, whatever. Stephen Dillane is literally the only reason to look at this.

While it is more concerned with showing brutal medieval fighting than with characterization, Pine's brilliantly stoic performance and a committed supporting cast (particularly Johnson) still bring enough life to these people to give the story meaning. Besides, the brutal medieval fighting is cool to watch.

This is very much a bloody battle based film, set in 14t century Scotland, with a decent cast and some compellingly tense battle scenes. Its not a film for the weak of heart, with one scene clearly showing a man who'd been hung, having his innards cut out - lovely stuff(!). I'm not sure there's much in the way of strong storyline, though no doubt Scottish historians will be well read about what truly happened at this time. Also, I recognised somewhere nearby - I rarely recognise places in films.
