Five years after surviving the all-out war between the Sanno and Hanabishi crime families, former yakuza boss Otomo now works in South Korea for Mr. Chang, a renowned fixer whose influence extends into Japan. A relatively minor incident causes tensions to rise between Chang Enterprises and the faraway powerful Hanabishi. The growing conflict gets out of hand and ignites a ferocious power struggle among the top echelons of the Hanabishi. (Office Kitano Inc.)

This has to be the most convoluted blockbuster trilogy ever. Probably 100 characters across 3 installments and by the time you learn who's who they're all dead. I do like how this last entry strips away the raw anger of the first two and it feels like Takeshi's character is killing because he has to, and he knows that's his end. There are some weird bits of editing that make an already-convoluted plot that much harder to follow.

Serving to tie up loose ends from the previous film, the power struggle in Coda is rather insignificant. The violence in Coda is infused with dark humour throughout (such as a scene where a yakuza is attacked during his own welcome-back party), with Kitano's comedic side being more readily apparent compared to the senseless brutality of the last two Outrage films. In all, it's more of an epilogue than a full-bodied end to a trilogy, recommended only to fans of the series.
