Gets a bunch of late-80's nostalgia points, but "Over The Top" has exactly the wholesome, trifling kind of story that can always be watched without remorse. Say what you will about how dumb arm wrestling is as the subject of a movie, but just remember, this preceded the adaptation of Hasbro's Battleship and a movie strikingly similar to Rock 'em, Sock 'em Robots.

It's a movie about truckers battling in an arm-wrestling competition combined with a father-son custody drama. Any critical analysis would be a waste of time.

There are only three movies with trucker protagonists that are worth watching. They are, in order from good to terrible to worse than that: Big Trouble in Little China, Black Dog, and then, of course, one that I'm probably forgetting. But no, not this one.

Very 80s, very cheasy... and ..., somehow, very nearly a decent film. Judging by just about every single other rating, I probably shouldn't like this movie, but I couldn't help being won over by Stallone. His likeable, "macho meets pleasantness" Hawk made the material work and, sort of against my will, I have to confess to enjoying it very much. [edit: It's actually very rewatchable, too.]

it's a cannon movie about arm wrestling truckers incl. a daddy-issues road trip, so yeah...it's no citizen kane. i loved it as a kid, the arm wrestling, the truck, the sappy dialog and score. and most of all rick zumwalt! he was the real deal, not some phoney bodybuilder with perfect abs and bone structure. for a "bad" movie, this has so many elements that lingered in my brain, i just can't fault it. call me a nostalgic turd and go back to celebrating the next star wars "movie".

Arm wrestling is possibly the least cinematic sport ever, thus rendering Sly's efforts to remake Rocky pointless from the outset, and the ecstatic enthusiasm shown towards it here is laughably unrealistic, but one crucial yet overlooked question remains: how does a truck driver get so buff? Hawk only does tricep pull downs in his truck, and 24 hr gyms weren't common then. That's just the beginning of the problems of this moronic blue collar fantasy that is as cheesy as 80's films get.

A guilty pleasure at best, obviously this film doesnt bring anythign original to teh table and was made simply to capitalize on the success of Stalone at the time, however something about it still makes it an enjoyable watch.

Reviewing a film like this is difficult for me. On the one hand, it's a piece of shit. On the other, Stallone is my muse and idol in life, and I fucking adore everything he's done, often because they're ridiculous and "over the top" (HAHAHA), and for that, they're some of my favourite things to watch. In my own eyes, this is a masterpiece. But, as a film, well...

One of the more unintentionally hilarious movies I've ever seen, melding the irresistible worlds of arm-wrestling and truck-driving. It's almost unbelievable that this is an actual movie that was pitched and approved by a major motion picture studio. The 80s were a differaent time. The kid's a real asshole, but a lot of bad things happen to him and it made me very happy. ...and I'd be lying if I said the final showdown wasn't every bit as tense and fun as the movie intended.

Went in hoping for some campy 'over the top' rendition of Stallonian action. Went out disappointed after not having been presented crappy Stallonian action. Instead, this is a soap rare for being on the same spectrum of shallowness all those action films are made on. And somehow this gives it merit. It was daring for Stallone to break a lance for what for many men - truckers, working people - is a matter not to be publicly discussed, yet needed and needs public discussion.

In the words of Norm MacDonald, "It's like Kramer vs. Kramer, but with ARM WRESTLING!" The film feels like it has an identify crisis: saccharine emotional manipulation mixed with Stallone's folksy and stoic badass persona. Much of the film involves Sly comforting his whiny and tearful son (who never hesitates to run into traffic when upset), but sporadically he fights random thugs or arm-slams some macho trucker. It might be better if it were more tongue-in-cheek, but it's laughably sincere.

The premise alone is so ridiculous that, as a Stallone movie, it gets points for being crazier than the rest. It's this small scale thing made huge by some supernatural movie magic. So, like most not-all-there action movies, it's terrible, but at the same time, something evil holds you to it. Crap!

I agree with the majority on this one. It is stupid. Period. Seriously, this is a wide-release action film about arm wrestling, which means that on face it fails. However, it is the definition of guilty pleasure, and Rick Zumwalt is in my top ten of Best Explicitly Typecast Character Actors of All Time (RIP).

An underappreciated little 80s drama about a father and son, reconnecting, and arm wrestling. It's all too contrived for words and completely obvious in its heart-string tugging. But the film has a tender performance from Stallone and a good deal of heart.

Over the Top is an appropriate title for this film. It's absolutely ridiculous. There's unviable film ideas, untapped film ideas, and then there's this. How anyone could ever want to make a film about arm wrestling is a mystery of its own. And it's no surprise we've never seen an arm wrestling film since. Sylvester Stallone bafflingly agreed to do this and it's one of his most forgettable and probably his worst film. This is a terrible film and it's everything to expect from a Cannon production.

Trucker Lincoln Hawk has his mind set on two things: Firstly, he's on a path of redemption, trying to win over his son's heart, after having been bullied out of the family by his upper class father-in-law, a mission painfully crystallized as the wife falls terminally ill. Now, the OTHER thing on Hawks mind is arm wrestling. Using a special grip (I'm no expert, but I'm pretty sure it's cheating), he challenges to be the best damned arm wrestler in the world. And why the hell not?

By far the best part about this movie is imagining the pitch session and the various execs who had to approve it before it got made. I admit it's somehow more entertaining than it has a right to be, but seriously? It's about arm wrestling. Arm wrestling.

I've never heard the title of a movie yelled out so much within a movie than in 'Over the Top'. For a movie about arm-wrestling, the arm-wrestling seems to be the worst part of all. The dramatic scenes are very hit or miss, though mostly misses, but they're still more watchable than the silly arm-wrestling scenes. They're just so surreal and don't fit next to the drama of the custody battle. Even Hawks showing Michael his gym/truck is less cheesy than any of the sweaty arm-wrestling truckers.

How this one passed me by as a kid I'll never know, but seeing an '87 Stallone flick about to come on the telly, starring him as a trucker trying to make amends with his estranged son while en route to the national arm-wrestling tournament in Vegas, there was no way I wasn't picking up the remote. And I was not disappointed. It's every bit as hilariously cornily brilliant as you'd expect from the premise, and so 'of its era' it's unreal.
