This documentary look at the rise and fall of filmmaker Troy Duffy (The Boondock Saints) is a stunning, often hilarious look at how, even in the shark-infested waters of moviemaking, one's teeth can be too sharp. (Film Forum)

How do you squander an opportunity where Hollywood gives you the keys to the kingdom? Well you do it in the most retarded way possible if your name is Troy Duffy. Everyone involved in Boondock Saints has a repulsive personality right down to the big talent agents. This is an introspective look into Hollywood "networking" and the ugly business side of things. It's also an important lesson as to why people don't make it, it's because their egos explode.

Troy Duffy is scum, but the filmmakers were also acting out of a longstanding grudge. It's a well-done documentary and the filmmakers have a right to be angry, but their bias can't be ignored.

Yeah, this is about how I pictured Duffy. Actually, kind of exactly. Spooky. Very basic documentary work here, but I'm always glad to see assholes exposed for who they are.

A great portrait of a guy who had nearly everything a director could want in making his first film, and managed to outstrip light with the speed in which he pissed away all of his goodwill.

Amateur, but there's great masochistic enjoyment to be found in watching a man's ego systemically destroy his previous good luck.

Viewed December 23, 2021. Not a particularly well-made documentary, but the content captured by the filmmakers is superb—Troy Duffy’s non-stop monologuing is the height of blowhard egotism, and the directors do a good job of illustrating how Duffy severs every important relationship in his life and squanders a truly incredible opportunity (while never removing his hat that says “The Boondock Saints” on it). Includes a cameo from a legendary Cassavetes scholar/weirdo Ray Carney.

The man himself makes this movie less watchable. It is a well made focused documentary, but Duffy is plain and simply a moron. He has delusions of grandeur about his small budget independent film that seems to make him think he is the most important thing in the industry.

A very poorly-made documentary, but the story itself is pretty interesting. It's kind of an instructive lesson on how not to deal with people. Honestly I think a more interesting movie could be made on how the heck he got a sequel through production.

Bad human being, okay documentary. I have to admit, I did enjoy rooting for Duffy's eventual, and well deserved, failure.

I can see this same story happening a lot in the rap world, except without the farfetched nature of the over-expectant lead. Once the co-directors are introduced as members of Troy's 'Syndicate', it almost immediately smelt of a setup. The music choices, the lack of the fall-out with Harvey (not on board? let's get creepy b-roll anyway) and then the attempt on his life part? All builds up to create an over-dramatic reenactment.

This could also be classified, from a genre perspective, as a comedy. Because it is so hilarious to watch this douche bag implode right before your eyes. Paging Mr. Duffy... your 15 minutes are up!!!!!

Since this doc was so hard to find my expectations upon viewing were pretty high and I was sort of disappointed. Don't get me wrong, it was an alright documentary about some asshole who made a sort of alright movie and managed to piss off EVERYONE in the movie industry in the process.

What an asshole! Who cares this guy made one of the greatest movies in the past decade, he singlehandedly killed his career showing all of America what a prick he is even by the entertainment industry standards. Pour a forty for Boondock Saints 2, it ain't ever being made after pulling this shit.

I'm a sucker for a good rise and fall film. Troy Duffy is a caricature of an asshole. Also, this film is interesting because it portrays him as one of the most unlikable people you could imagine and, based on an interview I heard him do recently, he actually doesn't seem to mind the way it portrays his personality. Also, there's a nerdy guy named Tony Montana (also co-director) which I got a kick out of

If you've ever wondered why the Boondock Saints' writer/director hasn't made anything since and has taken almost a decade to make a sequel to his original film than this documentary explains it in spades. Troy Duffy can be seen as honestly a nice enough guy to hang around with but it quickly becomes clear that he is far too immature to handle power. It's downright laughable as he attempts to threaten Harvey Weinstein, one of the most powerful men in Hollywood.

Hollywood has an interesting quality that it inflates people to be larger than life. I don't think Troy Duffy needed Hollywood to feel inflated. 'Overnight' shows what happens when someone lets that all get to his head. From the opening moments, Duffy is talking about busting down the doors of Hollywood and changing the way things are done. You almost buy into it as much as he does. That is until you see him burn bridge after bridge until he's all alone on an island bouncing outside of a bar.

The inspiring story of a consummate artist who fought the powers that be to create an enduring work that speaks to a whole generation... Just kidding, Troy Duffy's a douche, and his movie sucks.

Being an asshole : annoying. Being an asshole while being filmed and allowing the world to see your rise to semi-fame only to blow it all by simply being what you are : hilarious.

This isn't a particularly good documentary in a technical sort of way, but it's interesting to see how much of an asshole this guys is. What a jackass!

A documentary of opportunity, a reality show of some kind. It gets a bit messy due to unplanned nature of this whole endeavor. Directors did their best arranging the footage in chapters, like 'Casting', 'Preproduction", etc., but a lot of would be interesting footage is missing. For one, I am left curious how Weinstein noticed Duffy in the first place. Interesting glimpses into the kitchen of Hollywood, and the warm feeling when egomaniac bully gets put in the corner.

It's impossible to stop watching. This is especially impressive for a doc that skips some very important details ,all of them pertinent to Duffy's relationship to Weinstein.

Duffy is an incredibly uninteresting person and insufferable to watch. He's an obese, alcoholic, cigarette addicted moron who doesn't know when to shut up. Did I mention he is fat? Jesus, hit the gym buddy. And shave the sick neck beard while you're at it. The doc fails to address the thing I wanted to know the most: how did Weinstein find out about him? Literally no mention of this. I give it some points for showing them all fail at the end, which is strangely satisfying.

The greatest example of schadenfreude ever? The answer is yes, yes it is. If you hated Boondock Saints as much as I did, then this is one of the most satisfying things you'll ever see.

The content saves this from being an awful film. Duffy isn't a good filmmaker, but neither are his "friends".

Troy Duffy and his posse are all insufferable. The subject is great, but too unlikeable for me to enjoy the film. I actually saw this before I saw Boondock Saints. Can you imagine? All of that hype for your crappy indie film, and a movie released about what an asshole you are gets better reviews and generates more interest. How fucking funny, and I couldn't think of a bigger asshole for it to happen to.

This isn't really a good documentary, which is understandable because it is a borderline improvised project made by amateurs. But what it lacks in polish and technical ability it makes up for with schadenfreude, and by the bucketful. Watching Troy Duffy's ego inflate to fit his fat head as he acts more and more entitled to the gift he was handed as an unproven nobody is glorious, if a little unbearable due to how abrasive he is. I just wish it showed how he got his crazy deal in the first place.

Does a great job of showing exactly why this guy hasn't worked again in the industry, and why he doesn't deserve to work again. But the movie has horrible sense of time and it begins to get really repetitive, just constantly showing how arrogant and abrasive Duffy is, 2/3 of the way through the only interesting bits come from text explaining what happens during gaps in the footage. There's only so much of Duffy and his friends I can take, but it was still interesting.

It's a good look into Hollywood inner workings, and an excellent lesson in humility. But it gets repetitive when it's blatantly obvious where Duffy's journey is headed, whether you know the story coming in or not.
