Got a problem with the two leads...but Michael Keaton is about the evilest villain you'll ever see.

This movie succeeds in delivering a scary and sometimes shocking story about a naive couple who renovate their home to have renters, but end up selecting a cold and calculating criminal to be their tenant. Michael Keaton plays the devious tenant with an evil agenda convincingly. A horror story with a believable plot is rare, allowing this psychological thriller to hits hard and leave an impression. Landlords beware! Ha ha, don't watch this if you are thinking about renting a room to a stranger.

Oh, you know how the law loves to unfairly victimize rich landlords? Well, in whatever bizarro world where this is true, here is the thrilling indictment of such injustices! Maybe I just see Michael Keaton as too much of a nice guy, but he's the least intimidating villain ever. Matthew Modine, on the other hand, is easily the least likable "hero" ever. Almost want to call this subversive because it wants us to sympathize with a racist, ill-tempered yuppie.

A competent and at times quite engaging thriller, but it's a bit overcooked and cheesy. Also, Michael Keaton as a villain.

This movie is essentially there to make you angry. Since this is absolutely not the reason why I go to movies, I rated this a Zero. If you don't get as emotionally involved in movies as I do, and can leave without feeling angry and used, then by all means, watch this movie. I personally felt it was very blatantly and obviously manipulative, and it was not a fun experience in any way. Oh, and it's been re-made as Lakeview Terrace. How nice.

Yuppie tenant drama. Although the premise is tired, there are worse ways to pass time.

Obviously a good film to begin with - but so relentlessly grim I could not say it was enjoyable. But the ending certainly made up for it!

Solid 90's thriller with an interesting cast of Keaton, Modine, Griffith, Mako and D'Angelo. Keaton is menacing and it's always a plus when a film takes place in San Francisco. Some actions and motivations are quite far fetched, but that's a common problem with thrillers. It's an enjoyable 100mins, but the cast and especially director Schlesinger have done much better work elsewhere.

Michael Keaton is electric. Every time he's not on screen, the other characters should be saying, "where is Michael Keaton?" Modine goes from soft-spoken yuppie to screaming madman so quickly, that you start cheering for Keaton's character.
