A watered down version of the over rated Pacific Rim. The story was shallow and the characters one dimensional and most aren't given any screen time. The action scenes we get are messy with horrible camera angles and slow downs. I wasn't a fan of bringing on board a bunch of teens to appeal to the younger demographic. Mindlessly entertaining in a transformers kind of way but not as good so maybe closer to the Ninja Turtles.

Except the wreck of a plot, the main failing of this iteration is what the first one has in spades: the sense of scale and weight. Say welcome to the ninja robots a.k.a. transformers.

Enjoyable sequel is leaps and bounds ahead of its dour and dreary predecessor; still can't quite overcome the ridiculously goofy and ungainly construction of the robots, but at least it doesn't take itself so seriously and has a more likable cast of characters who are easy to cheer on (Eastwood's smirking and sneering is a delightful reminder of another big-screen icon). Ultimately just another Godzilla movie supercharged with a Transformers sensibility, but tough to dislike on that basis.

A generation ago this would have been a direct-to-DVD sequel sitting alongside Starship Troopers 2 in your local Blockbuster. A really terrible cash-in made by soulless people who have no understanding of what made the original so fun.

Really missed everything from the first film that made it decent. Horrendous acting and casting, completely nonsensical plot, and action that didn't have much of an impact. Extremely disappointing.

Great visuals and a delightfully diverse cast ably elevate a pretty unremarkable story; I only wish there had been more interaction between Boyega and the teen mechanic (and less of the really weak token-heterosexual "romance", especially since it failed to cover up the real love story between Jake and the Nate, let's be honest). In the end it's shallow and mostly forgettable, but fun and colourful.

Pacific Rim: Uprising has very little going for it. Its plot tries but we don't care because its characters are so bland, its action isn't very good, there's almost no humor, and the production ends with a tease of a potentially more interesting movie than we've been given. It doesn't have much robot vs. monster violence, and looks and feels like a mediocre Transformers movie—one that's been cross-bred with Independence Day: Resurgence. What a disappointment.

Pacific Rim was never a cinematic treasure, but Uprising takes whatever gold was there and squanders it. There is some visual appeal and entertaining larger-than-life showdowns, but there's no character whatsoever. Each conflict makes some contrived connection to the first. Calling it a pointless, soulless retelling of the first movie is the greatest compliment I can give it.

Pacific Rim Uprising is a lacklustre sequel in almost every way. Guillermo Del Toro brought such a sense of spectacle and scale to the first film that this sequel lacks and cannot capture. The script is woeful, the supporting cast is mostly weak and/or annoying and most disappointingly the set pieces are completely forgettable throughout. John Boyega is the only notable and worthy mention though and he brings charisma and likeability that elevates everything and everyone around him.

Welcome back to America's favorite game show, "What Did You Expect?" Seriously: what did you expect? That all of a sudden this franchise becomes a character drama? Criticizing Pacific Rim for its lack of rounded characters is like criticizing the action beats in The King's Speech; just because you CAN, doesn't mean you SHOULD. Its technical improvements may indeed be overshadowed by its downgrades in other areas, and no, I didn't like it as much as the first. But I'll take more of this any day.

There are some decent baseline ideas here, and John Boyega is a much more charismatic leading man than Charlie Hunnam in the first movie. The problem is in the overall execution. Gone are the intelligence and art of del Toro's original, replaced by bland designs, a worse supporting cast (way too much time spent on the goddamn teenagers), and a storyline that gets weaker and weaker the longer it goes on. It wasn't a bad movie, overall, but compared to the first, it's definitely a disappointment.

If "Pacific Rim: Uprising" is a lesser continuation of a film that many thought would never get a sequel, then it's one I'm still very much glad that we have. Del Toro's ambition and unmistakable creative vision is all but gone from the project in his absence, but what remains without him is still solid, a bombastic thrillride that does just enough with a new cast of characters and set pieces to keep things fresh, exciting, and engaging. Cancel the apocalypse folks, this one's alright by me.

Pacific Rim Uprising is a very forgettable step-down from its awesome predecessor. Although some of the ideas it presents, particularly to do with Cailee Spaeny and Charlie Day's respective characters are curiously in depth and interesting. The plot itself feels somehow both overblown and a little boring. In the end the film wraps with a feeling of not being complete. It's a launchpad for another franchise universe and it feels that way.

For a big action sci-fi, the robot vs. monster scenes are probably actually the worst part thanks to lackluster CGI and repetitive fights. Normally this would be fatal for a film of this ilk, but the plot, while not amazing, has its moments (see the effective opening world set-up, sinister Shao corp. and twist), and I actually liked the character work this time around: Boyega's engaging central turn makes for a likable lead and wild-eyed Newt and newbie Amara are notable supporting characters.

Look, I liked it. Don't @ me, but I really liked it. Many haters will hate it for reasons that are acceptable, but it was exactly what I expected, and it delivered in all the right ways. They hammed it up even harder than in the first, introduced some cool new stuff, clearly stopped caring about people's opinions at some point, and just went with it. It was great. Gimme a sequel please.

I didn't really like Pacific Rim (2013), but here we are. This one was kinda the same, except with a little less originality and less visual style than Guillermo del Toro gave the first one. John Boyega and Cailee Spaeny were decent leads, but the characters weren't that interesting overall. The plot just felt very familiar. I definitely needed a little something more in order to care about giant robots fighting giant monsters.

It's okay if you like this kind of thing. The plot is okay and performances are passable but the whole film feels a little camp, and to be honest, this helps it because it never feels like it's taking itself seriously, despite what's at stake. It felt like there were a lot more action scenes, which will keep you entertained, and makes it feel like it's worth watching on a big screen.

The production quality is there (not as awe-inspiring but it is still alright), but they couldn't deliver with the story. They tried to keep it quirky; but it felt forced, not genuine quirkiness. I don't know why Bodega gets all these continuation leads, must have a great agent because I do not see his appeal. They also tried to regenerate the Anime-style control room atmosphere, but that didn't work either; A miss overall.

A significant drop from the first one. While the first had some really cool moments (some of which still stick in my mind and I have a terrible memory), this doesn't really have that. It's never bad, and watching giant robots and giant monsters is a good time, but the action is uninspired compared to the original. With Del Toro it was a clear passion project and you could feel it; DeKnight has made what basically amounts to a pretty fun action movie.

I'm surprised by the low ratings on this. The screenplay was much more focused than the first one. It had good pacing, likeable characters with decent character development, and a ton of easy to parse Jaeger action. It was a little ridiculous at times, but it was better than all of the Transformers movies, the new Power Rangers movie, and Gareth Edwards' Godzilla combined.

This was really missing Guillermo's touch. Somehow they made giant robots fighting giant monsters kind of... boring? Don't get me wrong, the action pieces were plenty of fun, and it looked good, but it took half of the movie to get there. The writing was borderline cringe-worthy - enough so that Boyega's charisma couldn't right the sinking ship. If you liked the first one you'll likely enjoy this, but set your expectations low low low.

Pacific Rim Uprising feels much more like a reboot than a intended sequel, as it rid itself of much what made the first one somewhat enjoyable. Uprising's biggest faults are a lazy, thrown together narrative, forced exposition, and an laughably bad story arch. Boyega does his best here, but he isn't given much and neither is the rest of this cast, including talents like Day and Eastwood. Favorably, this should be swept under the rug and maybe comeback to cinema down the road.

Quality-wise I'd probably put it very even with the original. It's colorful and written in a way that's dumb but bouncy and fun and has a cast that makes what they can of the silliness. The monster/jaeger fights themselves I mostly kind of zone out for, although they are admittedly better than any similar scenes in Transformers: The Last Knight. Interestingly though I found it much less ANNOYING than the first film, if only because it had about 3% the silly overhype.

This time around we have Boyega having some fun while we follow a very bloated and rushed plot about the training of new pilots and the drone jaegers tech getting out of control — Newt's mind is half human, half alien, as we watch half kaijus, half jaegers make way for three kaijus that later become a mega-kaiju bound to mount Fuji in order to get natural resources. Fights seem cool and on a bigger scale, but the rest feels lifeless. Next film WE are going to fight them away.

Top badass moment? A 15 year-old building her own Jaeger; despite this being entirely implausible the evidence can be seen on screen, so I’m forced to accept that it is indeed, very badass. Eschewing any sort of character development in favour of having cool names, the Transformers on speed are back, trashing everywhere they’re supposed to be protecting. It makes absolutely no sense at all, on any level, but as a guilty pleasure it is kind of fun. No cats, chainsaws or (human) decapitations.

Not unlike its predecessor, PACIFIC RIM UPRISING relies on very broad tropes to prop up its raison d'etre: giant robot and monster fights. While not as personal as the original, it benefits from much-improved lead performances and is willing to get weird enough to remain entertaining, if ultimately predictable. This is how all TRANSFORMERS movies should be--whimsical, colorful, straightforward, and fucking less than two hours long.

They were throwing at us ideas and people, and they couldn't manage to unfold anything. Pretty much all of the characters were obnoxious and the teenagers were acting like an even worse version of Power Rangers. The Kaiju story had the potential to be interesting, but they focused entirely on the action, without giving the plot any flavor. Disappointing through and through.

Continues the legacy of the first without having to keep the same leads. It allows more to be fleshed out and Charlie Day is given a chance to do a little more than be the comedic relief. Boyega didn't really nail this role and didn't give me the big time action star vibes that he should have.
