The mob is trying to destroy Simon's character so it's easy to feel bad for him, but it also helps that he has a sympathetic face. It took me a while to get into it but as the mystery unraveled, I really started to wonder what was going to happen to Mr. Hire. Almost impossible to feel bad for anyone else but him, but that's kind of the point so I would say it was effective in that.

In style a good example of the overlap between noir and poetic realism. In plot it's clearly a product of its production time and place; prejudices and gossip leading to mob rule being a clear allegory to French behavior during the occupation. Simon is convincing in the lead, by first being a haughty outsider that falls for the femme fatale because of his secret loneliness and need for human contact.

This movie left me feeling very angry. The individual is devoured by the hate and fear of the mob.

Decent noir from France with the amazing Mr Simon as the odd character in town. While the story itself is good, the obvious parallels to then-recent events (occupation/resistance) are pretty evident. The characters at first feel a little flat, but there's a bit more depth to them shown throughout.

Nice noirish Simenon adaptation with a well cast Michel Simon. Very different from Patrice Leconte's 1989 adaptation of the same novel - not always for the better, but the ending works more in this one.

This was a sneaky murder story. The strange thing is that Michel Simon has had so many weird roles during his career, he almost came across normal here, yet, he is the oddball here too. He certainly stands taller than anybody else as far as personality goes, and manipulates the mood with expertise. Wouldn't have minded a darker tone, and not just the sleazy nature of events, but the playful style was still a clever one.
