Papillon

Most of the criticism stems from the story having already been told. Having not seen the original yet (which I plan to), this seems like a non issue. This remake is well acted and gripping throughout, even if it’s extremely depressing. Maybe not worth a second viewing, but worth renting.

Very slow but not boring, shot well, Hunnam puts in solid work. It's interesting seeing how the relationship between Malek and Hunnam's character develops and it paid off at the end. It doesn't really bring anything fresh to the table, but if you like prison dramas then it's definitely worth a watch.

In most ways, this remake is equal to the spectacular original. Malik plays the same mousy, stuffy guy Hoffman did. Hunam is cool and hunky like McQueen. I don't think it could quite have lived up to the original, and that's probably my own bias, but one thing this does better is the cinematography.

I liked Charley Hunnam in this remake of the Papillon story. Rami Malek was not very satisfying. It's been told a few times before, but this time perhaps with a little more grit. It's about being in prison in the 1930's so there is not much excitement. I understand now why the prisons do anal cavity searches. A little boring at times, but worth watching if you are in the mood for a prison drama.

Schaffner's Papillon is an incredible movie with two incredible leads. Watch that. If you've seen it, watch it again. Life is too short to waste your time on vastly inferior and utterly disposable remakes.

I didnt think the 1973 film gave a true reflection of time elapsing, but it was a tour de force when you compare it to this "Disney" remake. "5 years in solitary? I know, lets just have 1 scene where Charlie sits on a bench looking a bit gaunt... that will do it !". There's absolutely no sense of "the 30's", No sense of physical degradation (did they take skin care products with them?), no continuity of weight loss, no sense of filth, heat, dread or fear. Papillon 2018 is a VERY apt title

The movie itself was very good and recommended. Ultimately I would like to read the memoirs & the book to see how the to two compare.

Poor remake with good performances from Hunnam and Malek.

It is relentlessly brutal and often more focused on grimness than on characters, but the excellent performances by Hunnam and Malek carry it through.

Great jail break film.

Good casting and a compelling central relationship elevates this into an above average example of the prison flick.

A pleasant surprise. I think this movie is pretty underrated. The chemistry between the two actors was good and the story is very chilling. Obviously the genre has been done a lot of times before, but this felt pretty refreshing if you ask me. I felt a sense of adventure and the scenery was just stunning

One of the few gems of 2018. The combination of Hunham and Malek worked perfectly. A great and true story brought to the screen by two fantastic actors (especially Rami Malek).
