I found myself longing for a time traveling door of my own so I could go through and tackle myself in the theater parking lot.

Positively surprising. Maybe because my expectations have lowered when it comes to PA-sequels. Startin really slow (like all PAs), it was entertaining and tied all the other parts together quite well. Like most new horror movies, it's not scary though(in the sense of giving you goosebumps and making you look over your shoulder) but actually succeeded in making me jump a few times. - And people: don't complain about shaky cam when you're watching the fifth(!) installment of a found footage film..

Interesting enough so that it was not a waste of time but its really one of those "why the fuck are you still filming" movies. Its under 90 minutes but actually feels longer and I did like the fact that they pit gangsters against witches at one point.

PA 1 & 3 are fun horror films that I enjoy, which is why it's surprising that the series has also released 2, 4, and now this film, which all exist in oppositeland. I am trying to come up with a critical reason why I didn't like this film other than "meh", but I cannot, and since I am not getting paid, that's all you are getting.

Okay so, we sacrifice the suburban white neighborhood for a latino one, with a whole new cast of characters. While I really wasn't a fan of PA4, I have to say that this one was a slight improvement. There's still plenty of shitty teenage dialogue to be found, but the scares still worked, the camera gimmick was at least mostly fresher than it has been the last two movies, and you actually become sympathetic to the characters instead of not caring. Too many false finishes. See it if you're a fan.

Easy to hate on but at the end of the day an entertaining film. Don't go here looking for the Citizen Kane of horror films. Go here if you want to shut your brain off for an hour and a half. Not a complete waste of time.

Ghost in, ghost out. Seriously, setting up a horror story in a Chicano hood is about as fitting as Tommy Wiseau directing Schindler's List. Although that at least wouldn't be as boring. Oh, hi Amon!

Every year I keep watching Paranormal Activity and every year it seems to get worse. This one at least maintains if not improves on the last awful one.

I was pleased that this was at least better than the pretty bad Paranormal Activity 4 (2012). I don't really understand why this 'spin-off' exists, but it wasn't terrible. It followed the same basic formula of the other films, but it wasn't quite the carbon copy that the other sequels have been. It actually felt more like a Chronicle (2012) spin-off sometimes than part of the Paranormal Activity series. I can't say it was scary, but it was more interesting than the entries in the franchise.

Does enough different to brush some of the cobwebs off the series, but it's a lightweight.

I liked this one. Weirdly, perhaps. It reminded me of Chronicle at some points, which is a movie that I adore. Not enough to warrant a truly good score, because highkey it's not truly good. I liked the setting and there were genuinely creepy moments, despite a huge over reliance on jump scares. This series has just been fascinating, honestly.

At least this one had some more activity than the last installment! I found this one to be quite interesting, but I guess anything seems better after seeing Paranormal Activity 4. This one was better because it was less like the originals and more like a great found footage movie called Chronicle. I liked how once he is "marked" he gains some interesting powers...

Incredibly boring, with a story that barely scrapes 80 minutes but makes it feel like 3 hours! Its not scary at all but makes you jump on a couple of occasions. They also manage to crowbar in an ending to link this sequal with the rest of the franchise but by then I could barely keep my eyes open!

I mean, it's better than 4? But that's not really going for much. It could've been a fine standalone film. Adds a bit to the plot and backstory, and its nice seeing whats her face from PA2 again. But its a muddled mess otherwise. It earns 30 points alone for having them show up to the finale with guns. Like. Why hasn't any other horror film like this done that yet?

A slow movie that feels padded even at under 90 minutes, but it had a few decent creepy moments and one or two entertainingly stupid moments. That doesn't make it good by any stretch, but it was watchable.

While there are some comical moments involving Jesse discovering his newfound powers that work, and the change of setting is nice, this is just more of the same that we've seen again and again and again from this film series. Then that third act reared its ugly head and tried to go for a "tie it all together from a different perspective" ending (you'll know it when you see it) that's nothing short of eye-rolling, "Are you kidding me?!" awful. Not content with shitting on the horror genre as a whole, the Paranormal Activity franchise has decided to take a shit on itself in what surely must be the worst ending to a film since The Devil Inside. Still, it's not as bad as the second installment. What is?

It's pretty boring. But, it uses the shaky-cam, shooting-on-the-fly gimmick better than any PA movie since the first one, and the cast's appealing. Plus, it's got a legitimate narrative (with a plot and everything!), which puts it a leg up on all of its predecessors. Still: pretty boring. And not at all scary. It's about time for us to call this franchise off.

It was a continuation of the main series' story, but it was a spin-off because..? Oh, minorities. Segregation is alive and well in hack horror. Oh, I didn't like it because the first third was useless padding, and anytime anything happened that would progress the story, it was immediately set on the back burner. I found the characters more relatable than the other PA movies, so it had that much going for it at least.

Of course, this far into things, the director and producers are feeling the pinch of having to avoid the been-there-seen-that blues. And so they keep kicking up the raunchy language levels, the bloody carnage, the dark demonic possessions and, now, full-frontal nudity. (pluggedin.com)

While stopping somewhere short of calling it good in its filmmaking, story or characters, I will praise this movie, for, unlike Paranormal Activity 2, 3 and 4, not just being a remake of the original with a thin coat of paint. It's more like a fusion of Blair Witch Project and Chronicle. It introduces superpowers, gun fights and time travel to the Paranormalverse. This doesn't make it GOOD, no, but it is, unlike its three immediate predecessors, its own movie.

Kinda too sleazy and the film faces some deadends when it tries to fully embrace horror after so many silly Jackass-esque material, but the latino vibe is welcoming -- although everyone speaks mainly in english -- and it has some destroyed potential in those underdeveloped oh-not-cursed-but-superpowers!, oh-no-I've-been-marked-by-a-cult-of-women-dedicating-teens-to-the-devil stuff.

Top badass moment? Marisol spraying a vertically held mirror black and not getting single drip on it. That’s so hard to do; one bit of impatience and you’re generally doomed. (Not that I've tried.) Well the good news here is that there're no long sections with nothing happening that allow you to take a comfort break without stopping the film, but as a result it’s really nothing like the previous PA films. But I'm definitely up for more gangs vs witches. No cats, chainsaws or decapitations.

I know this was probably a completely unrelated movie they just rewrote to work as part of the franchise, but I'm glad to finally saw one of these movies is really damn good! The ending is cheap and obviously just tacked on for the sake of continuity (even though it directly contradicts continuity???), but I don't really have a single complaint otherwise. If you want a good horror film but didn't stick with this series this far, it's definitely worth checking out.

Critical disdain seems as automatically produced as the film itself. Which is so embedded in wider PA narrative that not calling it PA5 actually seems racist. How can people not like this? He goes through a magic door to unholy places and - no spoiling the end - is at the first film's house/final scene and gets killed. Ok, that does spoil the end. That was the end. And in all seriousness I thought about giving this 39. Which would have been the highest score I've given any of the PA movies.

This goofy PA trades in the series' trademark style of drawing out tension and underselling the payoff for a more interesting, fast-paced style that's much more entertaining.

The PA franchise is still head and shoulders above higher-budget horror movies, showing at least an inkling of how to frighten. The Marked Ones isn't short on cliches, but its weakest aspect is definitely its nonsensical adherence to the found-footage device. One's constant awareness that the camera is being diligently carried around absolutely everywhere and always, no matter how dire shit becomes, conveniently pointed in all the right directions, cripples what might have been a better film.

it's more watchable and less unintentionally hilarious than 2-4. the series mythology unfolding was mildly interesting and the cast was not annoying. the characters also behaved much more naturally than anything shown in the entire series. the big problem is that there was not one single truly scary moment in the entire film. not even anything a bit creepy. which is the whole point of watching a film like this. would have rated it much higher if it had succeeded in any moments of terror.

It's better than 2 and 4 in terms of story, and even one or two scares. Unfortunately its setting and characters are hardly interesting enough for investment beyond giggling at one of two genuinely funny moments. Which is what we all look for in a horror movie isn't it???

The ridiculous attempts at mythology are ever more ire-inducing, but the real problem with The Marked Ones is that it's not remotely scary, creepy, or even compelling. The only remotely interesting story elements are cribbed directly from Chronicle; the only remotely interesting dialogue sounds like it was left on the 21 & Over writing-room floor. The horror side of things? Nothing redeems that. A lazy, stupid, silly, shitty film. And I'll watch the next one anyway, because I am an insane man.

This movie is so BONKERS, and I used to be really annoyed with it, but when you watch it again - without any preconceived notion of what Paranormal Activity should be in general, I think you can have fun with it. It has a superhuman aspect to it that's a lot of fun to watch if you aren't overly critical
