Remember watching this with a group of friends in elementary school because the box at the videostore looked like it was going to be wild. It was wild but not the kind of wild that is enjoyable for normal people. Someone just saw Bob Balaban’s name on it and slapped the comedy tag. This is some great paranoia.

Fantastic score that lays the dread on thick without feeling overbearing like a few modern horrors I can think of. I'd say that was the highlight of the film except there's a blood drenched sex scene with Randy Quaid which officially pardons me from ever having to get curious about his self-released porn vid. Yeah, I wish I'd forgotten about that too.

An eight year old boy being raised in a 1950's suburban Utopia becomes convinced that his parents are cannibals. Their lives begin to unravel when a school social worker starts nosing around. Twisted black comedy with a surprising amount of genuine suspense mixed in amongst the carnival music and bright colors. Randy Quaid is unbelievably creepy as the sociopath father maintaining the illusion of a perfect family. Like Leave it to Beaver on acid.

Very odd horror film. Some folks think of it as a dark comedy, and it does have some humor, but the subject matter and some of the performances (Randy Quaid as the father especially) are a little on the creepy side. Doesn't totally work but it's worth watching.

Genuinely disturbing horror with the blackest of comedy. Art design reminiscent of Blue Velvet and some incongruous (and funny) music make this an unusual, creepy gem.

Horror comedy? Not really, well certainly not along the lines of other horror comedies from that time. Actually the part near the end when it tries to be a straightforward horror is the weakest one. But rest of the film, when it's a creepy almost surreal childhood drama, is just brilliant.

Lynchian with a bit of early Burton, Parents is a bizarre little film that manages to be a lot of fun. Quaid is a perfect kind of menacing while Madorsky gives an impressively aloof performance for his age. Visually, Balaban has quite a bag of tricks from split diopters to eerie ditch angles.

Like David Lynch, only even darker and more disturbing. Wonderfully horrifying and insane

Incredibly fun horror/comedy, Tom Arnold and Mary Beth Hurt clearly have a blast from start to finish. Is it a bit predictable? Sure, but who cares? It holds no pretensions about what it is, making it hard not to like at least even a little bit.

Rewatched, 3rd or 4th time, April 2016. A small miracle of a square-peg genre film that goes nowhere and pleases no one but manages to cram every scene to the gills with unspeakable dread that takes a while to dissipate when it's over.

What a tonally ineffective film. It's an 80 minute horror comedy that has neither horror nor comedy for the first hour. It's not even that it fails at being funny or scary, it's just that those involved seemed to think that bright colours and 50s americana are in themselves enough to be amusingly unsettling. It's all very tiresome to watch and the climax is more blunt, but still not very effective.

Is this a comedy that forgot to be funny? Or just a movie that forgot to be entertaining?

Don't remember a ton from this flick watched a long time ago, but do remember it being kind of a twisted kinda dark tale.

This was a quirky, interesting little movie. Not much happens and its not a movie I could watch often but it was strangely entertaining.

This film moves at a snails pace. The script could have used more excitement and it could have moved things along quicker. The actors do a good job with their roles here. Overall this film is disappointing.
