this is Ozu, and he never gets sadistically dark. The ending doesn't solve any of Kihachi's problems, but it proves who he is as a man and provides a huge heaping of hope.takes a while to realize where it's going, and I found the romance of the first half to be far inferior to the later half focusing on Kihachi as a drunk and a father but this is another dynamic Ozu movie that takes life as it is, throws it on the screen and convinces you yet again that yeah, life's tough, but it'll be ok

Starts off as a light comedy but slowly the deeper issues emerge and, while it never loses a sense of happiness, those dramatic scenes are really strong. A bit uneven but still very good.

The part about trying to force Jiro to marry the girl was stupid but everything else about this movie was fantastic. I was riveted the entire time.

Like many slice-of-life films, the whole might not be more than the sum of its parts, but those small moments are quite nice: from the highs of being in love (especially when you can't see she's not interested) to the lows of dealing with sickness. It's a good small cast that has become a family, and we get to spy on it for a little while. Fav moment: who needs an alarm clock? (Ouch!)

Slight but enjoyable tale of an uneducated widower trying to care for his young son. The story rambles a bit, but most of the episodes have something to offer. Ozu's real talent is creating instantly relatable characters, and seeing their innate kindness beneath their flaws. I can't think of an Ozu movie that has a true "villain", although I guess you could make the argument for Tokyo Story.

Yasujiro Ozu directs this social comedy/drama with lots of little tidbits and amusing reactions to everyday things. Everything from the sweet to the more aggressive leaving one with lots of tiny impressions. But I felt this movie was a little uneven and vague in it's storytelling to really feel like a complete experience. The regular cast did made sure every scene had its charm even if the real big moments was kind of left out of the production.
