I guess the metafictional aspects are a nice touch and at least probably seemed innovative for their time, whereas just about everything else about this reeks desperately of a very specific post-psychedelic era (again, think Jodorowsky, Makavejev, or just about anything Czech New Wave). It's never less than well-executed for what it is i guess, but for me a little of this Fellini-esque surreal, painfully post-Freudian nonsense goes a long way.

Nice poetic and experimental memory-images oscillating between the country-past and urban-present. Adds a meta-narrative aspect as the director enters into his memories and involves in its reconstruction through cinema. Those formal aspects could elevate this beyond decency if Tereyama hadn't rely that much on psychoanalysis and adolescent sexuality. All the circus motives, mother and metaphors of time and railways seem cliché and old, contradicting the innovative style.

Some beautiful surreal images but I couldn't bring myself to be at all interested in anything anyone had to say.

Faint traces of childhood regret, parenthood, and the nature of cinema can be felt across the landscapes of Terayama's mind. Perhaps it takes another watch to follow any one of those threads to its conclusion, but until then, I'm happy to sit back and admire possibly some of the most beautiful shots ever put to film.

Basically, an Alejandro Jodorowsky film with a bland symbolism. Even though I am a sucker for surrealist art I think this film just falls flat and becomes a lot less compelling than it has any right to be. There's just not enough horsepower to convey the narrative or even any emotion. So why high rating? Well, as I said I am sucker for the genre.

the japanese are such tradition wieners, you give them acid and they're still like "I forgot to wash my hands before supper, I've angered my grandparents spirits!"

I feel pretty confident in saying this is the best piece of live action surrealism ever put on film.

Em honra de Kaoru Yachigusa (1931 - 2019) filme #4. Não tem anos de psicanálise que haja tão bem quanto fazer um filme desses sobre si próprio. Arrebatador. BlurayRip no MakingOff.

Too surreal for me, but certainly contains its share of striking images. The dialectical three-act structure is interesting.

Perfection. Some of the most beautiful images I've ever seen. Highly philosophical plot as well, pure 1970s.
