Pauvre mère

Not sure what was going on or why but I wasn't interested enough to find out.

A widowed single mother driven mad by her inability to accept her daughter's death; a simple setup for a morbid and effective melodrama. There's nice camera work and editing for 1906; though perhaps the most interesting choice is the use of old trick film staples like stop tricks and double exposures in such a thoroughly dramatic setting to portray the mother's delusions.

A little girls falls out the window and dies and the mother is driven to alcoholism and insanity because of it. This is emotionally a very effective film from 1906. Not a happy story at all. But one filled with non-stop tragedy and Albert Capellani captures it perfectly.
