Although a little uneven, this movie features great locations, a sordid depiction of the life of a musician on the road, and a fiery performance by Rip Torn as a country singer with an attitude. This may be Torn's best work.

A window into a life created by impulsive decisions. Rip Torn's Maury Dann lives for the moment, every moment, and you see the consequences of that. The joys are fleeting while the pain sticks until it's lodged in the heart, which ultimately fails.

Outstanding. Begins at such a low simmer that it takes the audience time to notice the fiery dramatic substance underneath.

Torn does a great job of portraying a narcissistic madman who happens to sing country music.

One of the lost classics of the 70s: a day and a half in the life of a hard-living country singer (Rip Torn), who drinks, fights, hunts, womanizes, is a bad father, etc. But, archetypal as the material sounds, director Daryl Duke and writer Don Carpenter bring Maury Dann's world to blazing life; it's as good a depiction of these people and places as you could hope to see. Torn is at his absolute best here, but the whole cast is great (as is the music); only the overly-tidy ending is a letdown.
