The finale with a common man attached to a cross, carried by black candomblé followers that make their way into a church, must be the most powerful and socially representative image of brazilian cinema. This poor man is seen by everyone as a hero, a saint, a false prophet, a social agitator, a communist, a perfect character for a writer -- but not as what he really is, a solid, relentless believer. Here, the church is on the stairway, where the people are. And we never get to see what's inside.
