A historical farce shot through with such abundant humor, creativity and dazzling energy that it's never less than electrifying. Directors are rarely so willing to let their film be Everything as Tsui Hark was here, and yet, it achieves such a clarity of direction and purpose that it never feels like muddled or messy. Few film fantasies provide such sheer delight.

One of my personal favorite films. All three leading ladies are great. Brigitte Lin stands out as always. Some beautifully shot action and great comedy.

A general's daughter who dresses like a man teams up with two guys, a renegade girl who's daughter of a Peking Opera theater - she can't act because she's a woman - and a rich kid who lost everything in the opening riot - she's daughter of a general, too - to establish democracy in a country ruled by oppression, mayhem and violence. Beautifully staged -- from bits musical and romance to the constant comedy and action set-pieces who just get bigger and reconfigured as plot rapidly develops.

The situations with physical comedy are some of the few film scenes in recent memory I found myself laughing out loud at (and probably the only film where an attempted rape is played out for comedy). The crossdressing and relationships had a - dare I say - Shakespearean quality to them. The only issues are with Hark's sometimes frantic, confusing direction, repleat with dollies and pans and fisheyes and so on, usually all at once.

Never cared for this one. Donno why since it's usually considered a stand out of the genre. Oh well.

It’s messy, it’s fast, it’s frenzied and chaotic but it just feels CLASSIC. plotting is simple, but slick. tone hits all the right notes as the film shifts gears like a cornering race car going from action, adventure, comedy, light romance, TORTURE, friendship, father-daughter relationshipsIt’s a thrill ride without being a cheap blockbuster rollercoaster.

Pretty much the 'Raiders of the Lost Ark' of these Hong Kong action/comedies. Apparently at this time a girls' night out consisted of dressing up in night robes, drinking wine, and listening to Dance of the Blessed Spirits.

There are a few moments of excitement and good comedy, but they are few and far between. Mostly just boring and sometimes obnoxious.

the subtitles were horrible and rapid...but that just added to the experience. It was weird and fast and funny and highly enjoyable. There are some sweet action sequences and very original comic ones. There were some asian hotties also. A very fun time.
