The later previews for this thing made it look like it was gonna surprise everybody and be really lively and hilarious. That is not the case. This is a fairly rote, franchise-bourne kidflick, with the usual ratio of lulls to amusing moments. It's fine, I guess, if you've got kids. Lord knows I've had to sit through worse.

Too much of a good thing? The penguins are okay (funniest bits: staying hidden while rolling across stripes, the distraction), but the squid antagonist didn't work for me.

Penguins of Madagascar is a colourful spy-spoof film with a very high joke-per-minute count. Given most of the jokes are obvious, if you're in the right mood you'll have a few good chuckles. While the film isn't great (nor very good), the penguins are so gosh-darn cute and have a ton of heart that it makes the experience tolerable. Also Cumberbatch and Malkovich's voices are bound to keep you entertained.

Didn't expect much, but this was quite a bit of fun. The penguins were the best part of the otherwise mediocre Madagascar movies, and on their own they're still better than any of those movies. A nicely varied mix of comedy styles and the cuteness make this enjoyable, and while the actual narrative isn't particularly inspired it's good enough to hold the film together.

Grat fun to begin with, but as the plot progresses it gets tiresome to follow the four bird agents.

I loved this movie. The Penguins are precisely my brand of humor. I can't be ashamed of that. Laughing every ten seconds was not a cute exaggeration. Did I, thtee times, groan at myself after? Yeah, but here's the thing -- it's because I got played not because the joke was dumb. I didn't find any of it dumb because the entire script is high level self aware. all the henchoctopi share first names with famous actors so Malkovich can belt out lines like, "Halle! Bury them!"

These penguins are funny. Though I enjoyed the cartoon series more than this movie.

An animated spy comedy that unabashedly revels in absurdity. Nice 3D animation, smart dialogue and fun cartoon-style set-pieces. Lots of sight gags for the kids, but the abundant puns aimed at parents get a little tiresome. An improvement over the Madagascar films.

So it's a tad sad that there's also an abundance of less flavorful guffaws and goofiness in this particular bag of Cheesy Dibbles. It's the kind of cross-dressing, bum-slapping, unwelcome lip-locking nonsense between animated male animals that in the days of Bugs Bunny didn't raise too many eyebrows. (pluggedin.com)

Probably a bit better than expected. It has an absurdest feel about it that serves it well, but it's nonetheless very basic and very average.

First half was the best animated film of the year, lots of good humor; but it faded somewhat after that.

A funny movie that's smarter and has more heart than it should. The penguins prove that they're not just mascots of the Madagascar series, they're one of the few good things left in the series. Also Benedict Cumberbatch's character was fantastic.

I'm no major fan of the Madagascar franchise, but this is a fun and exciting entry to the canon, surprisingly funny, witty and pleasingly silly. It strikes a better comedy/action balance than a lot of recent Dreamworks material, so it's a shame it's not delivering better figures for them.

Penguins turned out to be targeted for the small audience, but this fact does not diminish them among the best cartoon characters ever created.

Animation movies need to rely on innovative plots, witty dialogues and lovable characters to click as a hit. The plot here an oft-repeated one - the neglected villain kidnapping the good guys (Wreck-It Ralph, Despicable Me). The dialogues are nice (especially the tongue-in-cheek references to Hollywood stars - "Drew, Bary, more power", "Charlize, there on") but not the type that would have you falling out of your seat. In terms of character, only a couple of penguins (Skipper, Rico) are funny.

Not perfect, not all that original, but.... fun. Real good fun! And no matter how much the producers wanted us to think it was the penguins, it was really Dave that was the cutest! Though I smell some Z-level producer will get inspired and make the zombie penguin flick Zombuins after watching this.

I've never seen an episode of the TV show, but it's telling that this one felt like a TV movie. It's just... there. It's absurdist but slapdash. Sometimes the humor is great, other times you're just bored as the writers give you lowest-common-denominator kid movie plot tropes and try to mask them as humor. Benedict Cumberbatch as a wolf/husky (they never make it clear) is pretty standout, though, I watched it for him and his mispronunciations of "penguin" are fun.

Laugh-out-loud, madcap slapstick film that loses its way a LITTLE bit when it becomes a bit too bogged down in plot. Still, it was well worth it to make a movie entirely on the merits of those hilarious penguins.

I actually kinda enjoyed it. I liked it a whole lot more than any of the Madagascar films. I just thought it was much funnier, with better characters, and superior animation. There's not much originality in the story or anything, but it's not bad. Yeah, I don't know, I just enjoyed the style, and it had some pretty funny moments. A pleasant surprise.

I laughed more than I dare to admit. The high pacing, fun action and endless streams of gags make for a highly entertaining experience. If you watch only one animated movie this year, it should be The Lego Movie. But if you watch two, throw in Penguins of Madagascar!

There's no stopping the march of the penguins, as shown by the new DreamWorks Animation offering. "Penguins of Madagascar" is not the studio's strongest effort, but does provide, in time for the holidays, lots of high-velocity cartoony action and gags designed to appeal to all demographics.

I haven’t seen the earlier Madagascar films, but that didn’t really matter. The story is quite episodic and very generic, animation is professionally done and the characters were funny - especially the North Wind team. To summarize: disposable family entertainment.
