OK, yeah yeah yeah, it anticipates Neorealism and has an all-star cast behind the camera. It still isn't that engaging

Sunday: A day for rest and fun away from everyday life. The film is simple but cute and enjoyable and briskly paced. It's ahead of it's time and nice to watch with the well done character sketches and a little bit of humour.

Robert & Curt Siodmak, Billy Wilder, Fred Zinneman and Edgar G. Ulmer...how's that for a lineup of talent? This is a curious little film from the waning days of silent German cinema. I say curious because from beginning to end, I couldn't help but feel a sense of morbid curiosity at not only the people involved in the film, but of the beauty that was once Berlin. As I watched, I wondered how many of these people on the streets of a bustling Berlin, would lay dead on the cobblestones years later.

Should be enough to make you long to go back to the days of your early 20's and/or pre-war Germany (whether you actually remember either of those things). Langorous plot. Not too much to worry about. Sorta: Berlin Symphony of a Great City meets A Day in the Country.

To say the film has a plot would be kind, but that's precisely what makes this so much of a joy to watch. It's a leisurely jaunt through a pre-WW2 Berlin full of normal people doing normal things. And it's arresting.

Just an incredibly leisurely and easy film to watch. An effortless blend of contradictions, landing somewhere in a combination of narrative and documentary. On one hand an interesting slice-of-life time capsule, and on the other a poignant evocation of timeless mating rituals. The cinematography is beautiful, shifting from the hustle and bustle of a 1930s Berlin cityscape to the relaxing and airy countryside.

Half the story of four young people on a Sunday outing, half a "city symphony" film showing the vibrancy of 1930 Berlin, before everything started getting weird again. On both counts, it's absolutely lovely... the story is rather thin, but it doesn't need to be that deep. It's more of a semi-realist impressionism. The photography is gorgeous, lots of idyllic little scenes and stunning close-ups. It's a extremely pleasant film to behold, with some engaging slice of life portraits.

A delight. The casting of non-actors works marvellously and the simplicity of the story doesn't matter so much when we're treated to stunning shot upon stunning shot. The close-ups of the main characters' faces were especially beautiful.

BlurayRip RARBG

While this film is extremely notable for everyone involved, I think it's fascinating for being very different from it's avant-garde, city symphony contemporaries. It's less of an abstract portrait of a time and place, and more of a "lets get real people to play themselves in a fictionalized version of their life". It's like the French New Wave 30 years ahead of it's time.

Historically interesting as an early example of a film using non actors (their performances are generally pretty good), this is kind of a combination of Berlin: Symphony of a City and a fairly run of the mill romantic comedy. Someone else used the word leisurely, which is a good word for it. It's also interesting for the amazing collection of directing/writing talent, including Zinnemann, Siodmak, Ulmer, and Wilder. It's very watchable but also felt a bit pointless.

Saw this with a live score by Icelandic band Mum, which worked marvelously and added a lot to the experience. I'm not really a fan of silent cinema, but this was a delight and worked as a slice-of-life/document of pre-WW2 Berlin. Knowing what would soon happen gives it a bittersweet undercurrent. It's style is closer to something like French New Wave than the exaggerated style I've seen in German/American silent film previously. List of crew (Siodmak, Ulmer, Zinneman, Wilder) is remarkable
