Leigh's attempt at a historical war epic is an intriguing change-of-pace; its sprawling, multi-character canvas feels Altmanesque, especially in its tight focus on conversations between its sometimes quirky characters. Unfortunately Leigh can't seem to quite get the boiler hot enough to create the visceral feelings of carnage that the battle scenes require, though the rabble rousing political speeches are fierily (and thoughtfully) filmed. Kinnear stands out in the cast as the ambiguous Hunt.

If you get a chance to see on this the big screen, don't miss the fuck out, as the ending sequence is a masterpiece to behold. Most things before it can be entertaining to observe, though since it shows folks arguing at others (to themselves), there isn't a whole lot of meaty discourse to be had -- but the analysis of futile political action is at least slyly captured. Leigh is clearly aping Loach, and maybe he does better than him (maybe).

Paints a very accurate picture of the era's politics. However, could have used a strong central character and a slight reduction in length.

Leigh goes full Loach in a bleak, often mostly educational history piece -- the filmmaking kind of comes in during the massacre itself, but this feels nonetheless engaging and politically resonant.

Some other reviewers mention Loach and I think another influence is Greengrass' Bloody Sunday, though this is much drier and slowly paced.

Too heavy and dense for its own good.
