Phantom of the Opera

1998
Romance, Drama
1h 39m
Standard story of the Phantom does have one major variation - The phantom is not a disfigured individual, but rather is an unwashed orphan abandoned in the sewers under the Paris Opera & raised by rats. The Phantom invokes death upon anyone who dares harm his beloved rats. In fact, The Phantom's nemesis is the chief exterminator (Istvan Bubik) who develops a rat-catching machine. (imdb)

The gore is pretty good, but it does nothing and serves nothing. Worst moment: the Phantom sits on a sound stage with poor CGI clouds as Asia parts the ugly sky with her bosom and poses awkwardly in midair, just slightly edging out Van Helsing for pure cloud cringe. Best moment: my wife (opera singer) walks behind the TV as Asia lip-syncs an aria and sarcastically blurts, “Is that *supposed* to be opera?” My heart also sings.

Well, at least it doesn't have a score by Andrew Lloyd Webber.

Not as bad as everyone else makes it out to be. Good kills, cheap thrills and a great Morricone score make this a watchable entry in Argento's catalogue.

An incredibly mediocre film, paradoxically made better by it's worst moments. For the film's credit, this was my introduction to the story of The Phantom of the Opera and it was told ... uhhhhh, relatively successfully. At least there's some cool death scenes here and there.
