Laughable. The only *gift* that I would ever believe John Travolta possessed would be the ability to metabolize cheesecake and other fatty foods at supernaturally slow rates. He's chubby, is what I'm trying to say. I'm a bitch.

A decent drama in the 'Flowers for Algernon' tradition. It does get slightly incredible towards the end, involving telepathy, telekinesis and erm... being one with the trees. Still, it's harmless enough and it means well, with the message: 'You can do anything with your mind! It's a wonderful, wooonderful gift.' My answer would be: 'Yeah, but I'd rather use it to wrap my mind around how some people can film an ape face-raping a frog and then decide to post it on youtube.'

George is such an annoying Gary Sue. His shining, all-consuming goodness is wreching. I particularly found the bit about the missing sick child laughable. George's empathy for the lost child is so great he physically becomes ill and trembles. Yuck. Just yuck.

The story we dream about: being granted superpowers, allowing us to finally surpass our ambitions, and aspire for something... Phenomenal. Unfortunately, Travolta's character doesn't solve the world's energy crisis with his newfound "intelligence", and he doesn't steer a school bus away from the brink of destruction with his telekinesis. He instead learns Portuguese and levitates small objects. I feel like nothing really happens in this movie, I'm not sure it had anything worthwhile to say.

Kyra Sedgwick and Jeffrey DeMunn give likable performances in this otherwise aggressively mediocre movie. Travolta is wildly miscast in the lead role, and the script is disappointingly by-the-numbers. Not really worth the time, but it's not outright terrible, at least.

I don't really care how believable the circumstances in this film are. The concept is interesting and has a lot of room for exploration. The problem is that the tone of this movie is downright depressing. Even the moments that try to be playful and light come off as faint sparks in the black hole of negativity. Maybe the tone is created to emphasize anti-intellectualism in America, but it does a pretty piss poor job of conveying that point through bad acting and horrible pacing.
