I'm still not sure if the story was told in pieces (ha) that are non-linear or if I'm missing certain plot points. I'm a bit discomforted by the idea that Katie Holmes being the black sheep means that she's living in the slums---an "ethnic" neighborhood that is basically a '90s stereotype of the hood, complete with black boyfriend. I can see the efforts from Patricia Clarkson but her role didn't excite me. I also was very skeptical of Holmes' intentions. Fav scene: cooking with the black couple.

Defines everything that is "quirky indie comedy." Under certain moods for something with a little more bite, it could be totally loathesome. Watch it when in a lighthearted, happy mood.

While there were a few humorous moments, there was too little comedy. I usually love Katie Holmes and Patricia Clarkson, but their roles left me mostly unsatisfied. Some of the story was rather poorly told and I didn't get invested in the characters. The story doesn't have much to say and meanders around too much.

I could have made this film with a camera cheaper than mine, two or three of my friends, and a skateboard. Then we could just add-lib the plot as we go. And it would probably be much more engaging.

Pieces of April is a surprisingly touching film considering how many other movies like it are out there. It's about reuniting a dysfunctional family, but does it with an approach balancing comedy and drama, while also being an intimate picture with its almost documentary style. It is funny, and it is sweet, and it's ultimately a lot of fun, even though its budget and short filming schedule seem to tarnish the ending. It still works, and ends up being a Thanksgiving film worth your time.

Although a bit rough around the edges, that's also part of the charm, making Pieces of April worthwhile Thanksgiving entertainment for families with children who have already matured.

Thanksgiving is a terminally underrated holiday in film, and this is one of the few movies that attempt to tackle it. "Pieces of April" does a solid job at tackling the underlying values of the holiday, but one can't help but marvel at just how dysfunctional this family really is, it never really explains why April's family holds her in such low regard, or how April's maniacal bitch of a mother even convinced a man to have a family with her in the first place.

The Supporting Cast Brought stuff to the table. Sisqo and Katie Holmes didn't steal anything from it.

Heartwarming for something with an indie edge. Patricia Clarkson as usual is a standout, and Katie Holmes is good too.

Watch it for Clarkson, who puts in a performance that's hilarious and deeply moving at the same time, but can't fully make up for the thin plot and Hedges' hamfisted direction.

IMDB's review sums it up nicely. A good vehicle for Holmes. Recommended.

Pieces of April is a mess of a film that flails under its lack of budget. Aesthetically it's drab to behold, with brown tones abound, an amateurish handheld cinematography and so many unnecessary close-up. If the aim was to make the characters, locations, and props look decrepit, the film goes a step too far. The cast is great, though the characters are horrific. The film is paced poorly and suffers from not leaning into its emotional moments, but there are occasional moments that work well.

Well-acted indie-comedy that fails to say anything meaningful about the odd family it follows. There is some great acting from Patricia Clarkson and Katie Holmes, but you aren't given any understanding of why April is being treated so harshly by her family other than her doing crazy things as a kid.

Pieces of April isn't a bad movie, but just feels like one of those cliche, run-of-the-mill movies about a quirky family. Didn't really find anything particularly noteworthy about it.

Touching but manipulative and ham-fisted. The level of contempt that April's family feels for her is really puzzling.

I love slice of life movies, but this isn't one of the best really. A lot of the characters are a bit all over the place. For the mum that would be understandable, and its fine, but April should be someone we like throughout. Not someone who's nice, then a pain in the arse, then nice again.

Not nearly as poignant and funny as the write-up would have you think. It's actually quite boring and it was really hard to like April as a character.

This movie was also nominated to Oscar thanks for Clarkson's performance. Actually all cast performed well and movie was enjoyable. Peter Hedges holds everything nicely together and aftertaste is better than on that roasted turkey.

Alright, after reading the reviews, I thought this movie would suck. But, though, not being a masterpiece, I was quite touched by this movie. I think that it is very hard to be objective about movies, in general and sometimes you come across a movie that you know has no great artistic value but the story is one that has some personal meaning for the viewer.
