Regardless of whether we choose so or not, our physical bodies determine how we relate to society. "Skins" tells the story of people with such extreme deformities that they are forced to either shut themselves away from society, or band together for survival. They struggle to find their place in a society that only understands normal physical forms, a society that excludes and that mistreats the different. (adapted from eduardocasanova.es)

Tries hard to be provocative and edgy with its wide array of physical deformities and sexual situations. It's commendable how the characters (on the inside) resemble real people with ordinary problems. However, none of them are that deeply captivating. It suffers a little from "many short vignettes" syndrome in that there isn't a complete 80-minute arc for any one character. Decent visual design. But not a true passionate melodrama nor a Cronenbergian body-horror. Squirm-o-vision lite.

I tend to think people approach this uncharitably, dismissing it of flatly trying to be grotesque in the pursuit of sympathy when its grotesque aesthetic plays so heavily into its themes of self-identity and self-acceptance and how this relates to others and society as a whole. Each character and story offers a unique angle on this which is consistently fascinating and I just love that the film has its characters do gross, disgusting shit but provides reasonably sympathetic impetus to it all.

Because of the beginning I wanted to stop to watch but I give film a second change. Very stylised colour and camera work but as a drama did not achieve interesting story arc it tried to.

I didn't enjoy Pieles. Perhaps because Spanish isn't my native language or simply that Casanova's bizarre vignettes of disfigurement & debauchery didn't evoke the sympathy he seemed to be yearning for. The overall plot is a little weak, but it was the characters & the banality in which they mope that really put me off. Casanova's direction is good, as is his eye for visual style with the film's distinctive pink aesthetic. Ultimately the film runs like an uninteresting bingo game of fetishes.

This should have been a short film. There isn't a full movie here. It isn't shocking enough to make audiences squirm and it isn't captivating in it's attempts of artfullness.

It's shock art with a Wes Anderson eye for color. Not much depth but a lot of raw talent. Weird and uncomfortable but unpolished and sophomore. A mix of emotions through and through.

Feels like if Eric Rohmer decided to remake Freaks.

Differently bodied people try to find their place in the world. This includes a girl born without eyes, a boy who wants his legs removed so he can be a mermaid, a young woman with her asshole and mouth on the wrong ends, a woman with facial deformities dating a man with severe burn scars to the face, a pregnant woman with achondroplasia whose child may inherit it. Pink & lavender color scheme. Very weird & very awesome. I loved it even more on second viewing.
