A very strange walk to crazy town elevated greatly by the performances of Mia Wasikowska and Christopher Abbott. A dark tale of sick obsessions. The writer was trying to provide a shocking story, but the characters were not well developed and considerably less than convincing. It had too many dimly lit scenes. It was intriguing and shocking, so it held my interest. Overall, it was not particularly great, but at least it was quite different and perhaps somewhat memorable.

So the director of "Eyes of My Mother" and the author of "Audition" make a giallo movie together. You now know exactly what to expect. It does it quite well, it's very stylish and it has some fun Ryuisms (of course the Patrick Bateman of the 2010s is a self-imagined loser), but ultimately it feels a wee bit obvious.

Wants to be a transgressive spectacle of shock and style. Ends up being an irritatingly derivative and weak caricature of the giallo and grindhouse tropes and production design that it plagiarizes. Superficial and poorly researched in its homage, everything it attempts to pass as creativity feels pretentious and insubstantial. A vanity project for a filmmaker who isn't as well versed in the genres as he thinks he is, and lacks the skill to pull it off.

10/100 because that's about how many minutes were worth watching. I'm mad at myself for wasting my time on this.

A wonderfully weird movie based on a book by the wonderfully weird and disturbing Ryû Murakami. Most people don't seem to like this that much and I'm not sure why. Maybe because this feels more like a Japanese film than a Hollywood one? This feels like a Murakami book/film which makes sense as its based on his book. I also didn't get the comparisons to Giallo films as this was nothing like the 50 odd Giallo films I've seen.

Stylish and intriguing while lacking a bit in edge of your seat horror tension. Leaves you with some questions at the end but without the frustration of the wrong kind of loose ends.

Good acting and thats it. Way too long, and clearly pretentious.

70'ler 80'ler dokusuna bayıldım. Filme ise maalesef hayır. Tedirginlik duygusunu sevdim.

I must confess I don't know exactly what to make of this film. The soundtrack is partially cribbed from gialli, most notably the amazing main themes from "Deep Red" and "Tenebre", and the film visually seems to be paying homage to that source with its' bright primary colors and vaguely retro look ... and even a split screen. (All the city exteriors are also models intended to look artificial). But these references are all superficial and the film is tonally nothing like a giallo.

This would have worked better as a short film as they are clearly struggling to extend it to 80 mins. Visually it looks good and has a look and feel of a Japanese film more than an US indie - perhaps thanks to the Murakami novel. Wasikowska does a good job in a bold role but Abbott didn't really convince me as the other lead. It's biggest asset is the soundtrack which plays like a greatest hits of Italian cult cinema themes, but I didn't think that they really fit the images here that well.
