At its best this has some quite rich and distinctive ideas in its presentation of the well-known fairytale; the gallery of grotesques almost makes this PINOCCHIO by way of Dickens, but also underlines the episodic nature of the narrative, causing a pacing problem Garrone can't seem to come to grips with; this lurches when it should be more light on its feet. Still well worth a watch, especially for one of Benigni's best (and shock underplayed) performances as a Grandpa Joe like Gepetto.

A welcome adaptation that would have benefited from more scenes with Benigni. Yes, you read that correctly. He is both funny and warm, wisely underplaying the role of Geppetto instead of stinking up the screen with his usual overblown theatrics. His scenes with Pinocchio provide the emotional core of the film, but Garrone is more concerned with his picaresque (mis)adventures, which, while relatively faithful to Collodi's vision, don't quite nail the tone of enchantment they are going for.

probably great for kids, but I'm sorry to say this just wasn't for me.

Really strange one, this. Mostly because it follows the book quite faithfully. It works in a way, I guess.

Just watch it and let it enchant you with its charming visuals, like Alice in Wonderland kind of style. Let the sound to fulfill the whole scene and maybe you can feel like small kid back in antient times. It is nice fairy tale. And enjoy the nice voice singing the song at the very end of the movie ;)

This adaptation of Pinocchio felt eerily familiar, and not due to Disney's effort. Garrone either borrows heavily from his own 'Tale of Tales (2015)' or his style is cripplingly distinctive. Much of my review for that film applies here; summarily, lush visuals & a slow pace. Benigni's opening grift is the most entertaining part of the film, which is never better than alright. Perhaps it's the rarely subdued language working in contrast to the tone of the whole film; I just couldn't get into it.

Another lost chance of making a Pinocchio more cruel and satirical, like the book. Garrone takes few steps in that direction, but not enough. It should have been longer.

TV aberta.

Maybe not for younger kids, but a really good rendition.

They did a tremendous job with the visual approach! Really felt like genuine characters in a slightly dysfunctional world. The film did have energy and pacing issues, resulting in it not becoming the vibrant adventure it should have been. But I still got that cozy feeling. The wooden kid was nicely done and Roberto Benigni as his father was one that managed to elevate the experience regardless of the issues Pinocchio (2019) had.

Constantly uneven and constantly interesting. Benigni’s Gepetto is great.
