The piranhas are back and this time they can fly! Alas this movie approaches this ridiculous idea too serious, with too much time spent on dull drama with stock characters instead of flying piranha attacks. Lance Henriksen & Tricia O'Neil are the most watchable aspect. This is famous also for being James Cameron's debut feature, although it's heavily discussed how much he actually filmed. Anyhow people coming in to see some early example of his talent will be very disappointed.

Between Cameron's direction, the solid actors involved, & the premise of flying goddamn piranhas, this should have been an instant camp classic. Instead, it's an incoherent & awfully put-together mess of a sequel that makes the original- which was fun, if not excellent- look like a masterpiece. Henriksen, O'Neil & Marachuk try their best here, but the supporting cast is pretty weak & the material does nobody any favors. Nonsensical, confusing, convoluted, & sort of a waste of time. Don't bother.

Piranha II is utter shit, but it's funny shit; piranhas that look like the singing bass except with wings, flapping around the caribbean and munching on people out of pure evilness. Fair amount of nudity, even worse special effects, absolutely zero suspense, but hey; at least it's better than Titanic.

I guess they ran out of good ideas. I mean, the piranha in this one are genetically spliced with like 3 other types of fish, so they can survive on land and fly. Yes, they fly. If gene splicing was so easy, the world would be a much stranger place. Oh, I almost forgot: Lance Henriksen is awesome. always. period.

I LOVE Leonard Maltin's review where he said "you'd have to be PSYCHIC to spot any talent in director Cameron". This is pretty bad though, and the reviews he got for this were part of the inspiration for The terminator

Amazingly enough, I felt like this movie was only half bad. The writing is atrocious; at the same time, you can see right away what a difference a good director makes. The cinematography is leagues better than most B movies, and the acting, at least most of the time, is also noticeably better. ...And then you have the winged rubber fish "flying" around and biting people's necks, and the terrible continuity. I had a good time laughing at it with friends, anyway.

Honestly I don't really think James Cameron had much to do with this picture, but he's listed as the director regardless. This film is hilariously terrible in almost every single way, complete with bad FX, acting that can't even really be tagged with the word, and a plot that I don't even remember. But I know it was weak. In the hands of someone who can do camp really well (Roger Corman comes to mind) this would have been a decent picture. As such its worthy of being featured on MSTK.
