Doesn't impress with it's story or humour but makes you feel happy and is generally well done. Good acting performances and a great soundtrack.

After the movie ended and the credits were rolling by, the one thought I had was that all I wanted to do was watch it again. It is a rare movie where even though there were a lot of characters, I was interested in all of them. I would of been disappointed if this movie finished any earlier as the length was what I most admired about it, not to give credit where its due as the soundtrack is well deserving of lots of it.

"Writer-director Richard Curtis is about as rock n' roll as the average great-grandmother, so it's no surprise that Pirate Radio, his ode to the irrepressible spirit of '60s classic rock, has all the electricity of a knitted sweater." - Nick Schager

There's a difference between a well made movie and a good movie, and this is...a well made movie. There's lots of people who are clearly very excited about rock and roll, but there is zero story arc for the viewer to latch on to. Most of what transpires in the movie could have happened in any order. There are a handful of good laughs, but the most entertainment value was in the music and the montages of people in period clothing/hairstyles rocking out with their transistor radios.

Fails on almost every level. You don't care about most of the characters, those you do care about are miserable, little-to-no historical background is given to explain the setting, the boat's adversaries are portrayed as cardboard cutouts, and the humor just isn't funny. I had high hopes but they were completely unrealized. Perhaps this is "a British thing we non-Brits can't possibly understand"...problem is, I'm an Anglophile, so I'm pretty sure I could. There's just no there there.

Got all of the elements of a masterpiece until they took artistic license with history a little too far, and the ending was a complete over-the-top smack-down (except for the ending of the ending). I laughed my butt off through a lot of it and had more fun at a movie than I've had in a long time. I loved it's political incorrectness. J. Geils--Night is wild but I'm in control, Gotta brush your teeth with rock & roll. "And the walls come a-Tumblin down"--(shoulda used it during the credits).

This labored comedy takes a fascinating period in music history and turns it into the typical Hollywood conflict between holy anti-establishment rebels versus evil fascist government tight-asses. Concludes with perhaps the most overblown feelgood ending ever committed to film.

Excellent. I wasn't expecting much to be honest but this movie really did rock. The ensemble cast works great, the soundtrack couldn't possibly be better, the movie keeps you smiling till the end, and the end beats the Titanic hands down. Very highly recommended.

It's made an odd impression on me. Some parts were fun enough, some actually very funny, but then the bad guys, the plot in general ... some parts just seem a bit indifferent or weak. What really makes it worth seeing is how incredibly cool Bill Nighy and Nick Frost are, though. Great efforts. And January Jones? ... I'm ... I ... [sigh].

An ultimately pointless romp on the water that, while fun, never comes together quite the way it should. The plot is so shapeless as to be practically non-existent, but it pairs together some great character actors doing fine work with a terrific rock soundtrack. Despite some solid laughs, in the end it's quite forgettable, but a compelling time-waster nonetheless.

'To all our listeners, years will come, years will go, and politicians will do f**k all to make the world a better place. But all over the world, young men and young women will always dream dreams and put those dreams into song. Nothing important dies tonight. The only sadness is that, in future years, there'll be so many fantastic songs that it will not be our privilege to play. But, believe you me, they will still be written, they will still be sung and they will be the wonder of the world'

An entertaining soundtrack doesn't disguise that Philip Seymour Hoffman and Nick Frost provide the only moments of any quality in a film that meanders aimlessly thorugh its overlong run time. Curtis produces a typical sickly Curtis-esq script (unsurprisingly!) and casts his usual set of bland British nobody's who should stick to acting in EastEnders and other soap operas. [PUN ALERT!!] 'The Boat That Rocked' sinks without trace!

It's so much too long it's not even funny, it's all over the place and I spent most of the time wishing I was watching Love Actually instead. Still, the humor is great, the characters are great, the cast is briliant, and Richard Curtis always manages to charm me. But seriously, why is it so goddamn long? A film should leave you wanting more, not less. I wanted this to end after 1 hour before it started boring me and I started not to like it. It did not indulge my wish.

Retrospective smugness around the swashbuckling rock-and-roll partisans who in the mid-Sixties were broadcasting their preferred music from the high seas in order to circumvent British bluenoses (represented one-dimensionally by Kenneth Branagh). The freedom fighters are as insufferable as the oppressors, making it difficult to take sides. Wall-to-wall golden oldies, with the notable omission of the Beatles.

Typically clever script by Richard Curtis and top-notch performances from Bill Nighy, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Rhys Ifans and Kenneth Branagh in what is a very funny but also thoughtful film. It starts off as a comical, feel-good yet unremarkable coming-of-age-in-the-'60s tale but evolves to be a profound take on life and beliefs and culminates in an anthemic, fist-raising, hair-rising finale.

Somebody wanted to make their own Almost Famous. Please don't let their Rolling Stone Magazine-level rock & roll nostalgia-grabbing trick you into thinking there's any sort of substance here, it's a rip-off with a soundtrack that is on par with anybody's local oldies\classic rock station's daily output.

Richard Curtis really should be writing greeting cards for a living, not movie scripts. Nothing more subtle than a platitude has apparently escaped his pen in over a decade. Here, the "bad" guys are so bad and the "good" guys so lovable, there is no allowance for any subtlety at all. The only glimmers of any individuality are when he pokes fun at typically British foibles, but they never really go anywhere either. Still, better than the execrable "Love, Actually".

A very solid and very fun movie. The story of these pirate radio stations is pretty interesting and the solid cast aboard the boat give us an entertaining film. There is also a side-story of us following a kid (Tom Sturridge) that isn't horrible but is rather cliched and not nearly as compelling as the story of the boat itself and the fun the crew has. The soundtrack is great and helps with the flow of the movie and isn't just random rock songs of the 60's. Have some fun and watch this film.

This film is heart-warming, charming, quirky and all those other sadly overused words. But it also happens to be watch-on-your-own-and-laugh-out-loud funny, with an absolutely stunning cast and (naturally) one hell of a soundtrack. My one complaint is that, for a film about rock 'n' roll, the storyline is annoyingly conformist to a standard Hollywood feel-good movie, which oddly - despite the cast and being set off the coast of Britain - makes it feel quite American. A boatload of fun, though.

I have one complaint with this film, it felt a bit like a TV show had been cut up in to a movie. But that's not really a complaint, it's me wanting a heck of a lot more time with the characters. Farcical comedy as the bad guys are pantomime style, but all round brilliant from the music to the performances. Hats off to the real pirates that blazed the way, would LOVE to have done something like this myself
