This sequel ekes out some memorable bits, and Depp is still fun, but the whole thing is bloated, messy, repetitive, and far too convoluted for what should have been a simple, lighthearted romp.

Awesome sets and design. Davey Jone's crew and ship were amazing (although they did remind me of the ship in the first film). Several scenes and characters weren't needed, and the plot seemed like half a film. Still it's fun and has fantastic visuals.

Some exciting and fun moments, and it all looks very cool. The plot, though, is drawn out and often excessive - it seems like the producers thought up the great sequences first and capriciously devised story elements to connect them. Also, Johnny Depp's schtick - which essentially elevated the first from standard fare into entertaining adventure - is tired and not well used here. Still, it was overall better than I expected, and the prospects for the third film look good.

After being pleasantly surprised by the first movie , this one cannonballed off the plank. I just didn't find Depp to be as funny in this one, and he was what made the first movie so great for me. The swordfight near the ending (which over 2hrs to get to) was alright but a little hokey. I enjoyed the music (tryin to find a positive). Did they really need that whole first part with the tribe, or was that supposed to make me laugh with Depp's mannerisms. If so I missed the memo.

Disney followed-up their surprise hit "Pirates of the Caribbean:The Curse of the Black Pearl"(2003) with this messy middle chapter in an intended trilogy. With $ $ signs in their eyes Disney took a perfectly fine stand alone movie and began constructing some sort of epic sized story solely to manufacture money. Although the sequels have been financial successes, the stories being told are bloated with failed attempts to recapture the charms of the first film. Bigger and dumber, as is tradition.

It really couldn't capture enough of what was great about the first film. The humor wasn't as good, there were way too many story lines and it was pretty convoluted. The action scenes and visuals are the only real saving points of this film. Davey Jones and his crew looked pretty damn cool and the Kraken looked good as well. Maybe I would have liked it more if it wasn't such a huge letdown from the first movie, but as it stands this is a movie only worth watching if you LOVE the series.

After the nuanced, clear, and satisfying character arcs and long but coherent narrative of the first film, the overall floundering and bloated feel of this sequel is disappointing. Debts, dice, keys, compasses, curses, it's all a bit confusing. Story aside, there's still a lot of good fantasy adventure fare to enjoy (save for the cringey cannibal caricatures), including fun slapstick action and immersive world exploring (the design of Davy Jones and his damp crew is particularly remarkable).

A solid example of the makers of a sequel saying "let's take everything that made the first one good and just give them MORE of it." Also suffers from a distinct lack of Geoffrey Rush. Still entertaining, though - and Davy Jones manages to elevate it, too.

Two and a half hour long action sequence, with familiar characters and great production values. The film packs a lot in, and jumps straight to featuring the the fan favorites, which makes for an entertaining film. But it lacks a bit of the cohesive story and charm of the first - there's a bit too much action and filler and not quite as much plot movement.

Dead Man's Chest tried to give the POTC series more maturity and depth than the first film. Sadly the result is an overlong and weaker film. There's too many characters and different agendas that over complicate what is meant to be a family friendly popcorn flick. Johnny Depp is fun once again, but the novelty of his off the wall performance has began to tire for many people. The films saving grace is the brilliant set pieces and score. But overall this sequel is unnecessary and forgettable.

A huge let down. Whereas the original utilized comedic relief to a successful degree, Dead Man's Chest takes it overboard (pun intended). It's more of a straight comedy, relying very heavily on lame slapstick and a silly supporting cast. It really ruins the swashbuckling action adventure atmosphere that made the first one so fun.

My problem with all the Pirates of the Caribbean sequels is that they seemed to be written based around thinking of wacky things Johnny Depp's character can do. The first was a good story with a well written character that Johnny Depp made fun and crazy and interesting, but just putting him in wacky situations over and over and over is boring.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest is a film that tried to be bigger and better, and while this did help it in some aspects, mainly in the special effects, it hindered in many others. The humor isn't as funny, and the plot is overbearing and doesn't allow for any character development. The acting is still fine, and the action scenes are better than ever, but the film just doesn't quite mesh like the first film.

Bad sequel to a decent film. After Depp's star turn as Jack Sparrow they clearly tried to make a film with 200% more Captain Jack, in an attempt to wring every last iota of fun out of the character. While it has all the elements that made the first a blast, it somehow seems like a cash-in. Which is a shame, because there's some fantastic action set pieces here. But the long running time and increasingly convoluted story makes it feel like a cheap shadow of the original.

This absurdly long chapter serves up plenty of Depp hamming up one scene more than the next, with little substance nor a meaningful story, and seems to aspire merely to showing off the tens of millions likely spent on CGI and special effects. Somewhat effective follow-up doesn't have the charm of the first.

Trying to recapture the success of the original Pirates of the Caribbean movie, this one fails miserably at character development, plot, and story. The acting is solid and the direction is top knotch, with action and comedy to hold the film up, however overall the story lacks the heart of the first film and pulls the story from a beautiful historical fiction into a fantasy setting with only the pennage and none of the meat of the first.

Fun, but more of the same. This movie does little to advance the plot of the series, and most of the best plot points are left under-developed, presumably left for the next film. I was a firm believer that this film would be much better retrospectively once it had its ending, but then At World's End came out and boy, was I wrong. Still, Davy Jones and crew, the Kraken... This movie has some pretty amazing special effects, set pieces and action sequences. The final act is non-stop thrills.

Good use of the large budget and linked into the first film well, but dangerously close (on occasion) to suffering from The Matrix syndrome, where an over-reliance on set pieces and dragging out of the plot led to some of the film feeling a little overblown. Jack Sparrow gets too much time as the franchise's main character since the first film, and the "cliffhanger" for the third film was fairly obvious. Enjoyable overall despite it's faults.

This wasn't nearly as bad as I'd been led to believe. Production quality is top-notch, there's not too much downtime, it's pretty fun. It does seem to lack a certain spark and comes off a bit like a paint-by-numbers adventure flick, but it's easy enough to just kick back and enjoy it. Instead of making one sequel, DM'sC spreads action over long scenes, making ridiculous battles carry the whole film. The story is spread very thinly in between action, and much is saved for the next installment. Even a trilogy's "bridge" should have more closure. Depp steals less of the screen from the greatly improved Orlando Bloom, so that's nice, but not nice enough. Ugh!

Not as good as the first but Davey Jones and his crew were pretty amazing (and the Kraken was pretty cool). Quite a bit grotesque and gory for a PG-13 film. First watching this two decades after I watched the first movie, I'm not fully confident in saying this but the first half seems roughly on par. With its archetypal characters, liberal use of CGI (for the aughties), physics-defying stunts and lowbrow, sometimes slapstick humor, it felt a lot like watching a cartoon. Depp is charming, but what little entertainment value it does have gets drowned in the monotony of frivolous action, which turns into a slog over the excessive running time.

There are some cool visuals involving Davy Jones and a Kraken, but the majority of the film has lost a lot of the spirit of adventure that made the first film feel so fresh and new. A lot of the film's great cast take a backseat to a heavier reliance on special effects. Johnny Depp's Jack Sparrow still is fun whenever he is on screen, but by going bigger and getting more and more complicated with curses and monsters, the film risks losing its audience along the way.

Quite a step down from the first movie. It's still fun and has all kinds of pirate shenanigans. I think there was plenty to work with without adding the whole love triangle subplot as well as the whole cannibal subplot that doesn't really do much for the movie in general. Granted maybe the problem is the idea of sequels needing to be bigger and more instead of another tightly presented story in the same world. It doesn't really work here, but it's still worth a watch every once in a while.

With the same great performances, awesome score & fun effects of the original, as well as several twists & turns to keep things interesting, there's plenty of good here- however, the story is noticeably weaker than Curse, with too many subplots that get jumbled with one-another & much less nuance in the characters & their dynamic, as well as an overemphasis on comedy & zaniness that causes some tonal issues. It's still entertaining, but less so than Curse, & it feels like the setup that it is.

Dead Man's Chest is flawed. The story suffers due to it being shot back to back with the third. It stops dead in its tracks for a solid half hour for the cannibal scene. However, it generates heavy steam from Johnny Depp's still amazing work. The best in the biz sword and ship action scenes. And an amazing performance from Bill Nighy as Davy Jones. Who by the way is one of the best CGI animated creations in film history. Hands down.
