Surprisingly watchable, with little to hate. Rush is noticably lacking in zeal but who can blame him? Depp and Cruz do what they can with a so-so script luckily not completely devoid of gags, although they are in short supply. In a film often pushing lackluster, having few redeeming qualities (the mermaid scene was good), it's their energy which barely keeps everything afloat. Sparrow is, however, considerably less funny and endearing than we know he can be. A passable upswing for the franchise.

The fourth film in the "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise ends with the infamous Captain Jack Sparrow saying "I have no say in it Gibbs, it's a pirate's life for me" as he looks into the camera and winks. Maybe it's the tinfoil hat, but clearly Johnny Depp is attempting to send a secret message to the audience that Disney has him hostage to their movies. Obviously Disney executives are using some form of blackmail against him, which might help explain "The Lone Ranger"(2013) and the others.

It was pretty good because it didn't have Orlando Bloom in it, that guy talks like a deaf person. And what I took from this movie is that the religious guy really doesn't give a shit if he's willing to bang a mermaid. Bestiality is a sin MISTER MAN. Blackbeard doesn't do anything but walk around being Ian McShane, the movie is just alright but i'll never watch it again. See you all in the next one, fff

Moderately entertaining and unexciting, "On Stranger Tides" is a passable but instantly forgettable and strictly by-the-numbers entry in a declining franchise. Shorter, more comprehensible than its predecessors, but without the overstuffed, rousing action scenes, the budget has been cut down and it shows. Depp and Rush are enjoyable, but Cruz and McShane are mediocre while Knightley and even Bloom (ugh) are surprisingly missed. Also, the 3D adds nothing and the glasses are uncomfortable.

It's no Curse of the Black Pearl, but I didn't hate it. Admittedly, I'm a huge sucker for adventure movies, of which there are maybe two a year, so I gotta take what I can get. While acknowledging its many flaws - i.e. the interminable missionary/mermaid romance - I enjoyed that the climactic sequence was more flesh-and-blood than At World's End's cartoon orgy, and Ian McShane as Blackbeard (although, sadly, he never calls Sparrow a cocksucker).

Honestly, this ain't bad. Sparrow doesn't belong front-and-centre and the script suffers from that, but Depp still appears to be having infectious fun. The adventure isn't as grandiose as the trilogy, but it's still interested in new ideas and mythologies. McShane is fantastic as Blackbeard. Some dry spells here and there and an awkward first act, but this is a solid entry in an unfairly marred franchise.

Clearly not as dissapointed as all the others.
I didn't expect this one to be fabulous (luckily, because it wasn't), but they gave it a good try, trying to do something about the loss of class in every department in this film. Sparrow is still his same old wacky self, however the jokes seem like I've seen them before. I'm affraid they'll want to make another movie, but for Captain Jack Sparrow's sake.. End it now. It's time. Savvy?

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is just about what you'd expect: A cash-in film. I was hoping that being a fan of Captain Jack Sparrow would be enough to save it, but it isn't. The action scenes are uninspired and the interesting characters aren't given enough time. The people making this film might think they've created something you'll have trouble following along with, but if you have any trouble, it's because you'll have fallen asleep and missed something.

Clearly proves that Jack Sparrow needs Gore Verbinski and a support character to be the "Captain" Jack Sparrow. They've cut the budget to force creativity, unfortunately the crew assembled by Rob Marshall didn't had it. Instead we get a PoC movie without any majestic shot, without some "disney" action , without a clever plot and to be the cherry on top,new introduced but painfully underdeveloped characters .

For a straightforward treasure hunt it sure feels aimless, and say what you want about Verbinski's sequels, but at least they had some "oomf!" that this chapter lacks. That being said, It's not a terribly bad movie, just really forgettable and a bit dull.

This franchise is less and less a pirate story and more and more a collection of gags, bad jokes and somewhat funny lines. The acting is plain and dull, but for the always evil and great Ian McShane who is the very embodiment of Black Beard. But let's be fair here. Nuff is e'nuff. Somebody needs to put the Sparrow down! This franchise would do well with a prequel, I for one would like to know what really happened. But after that the Sparrow has to go the way of the dodo.

Depp's character was already wearing thin in part 3 of this series. This film, which ditches almost everything from the original trilogy, feels like a bad cash-in. With all the fun, set-pieces and impressive visuals of the original trilogy stripped away there isn't much left. Really only for Depp fangirls and boys who want a bit more of his hammy overacting.

Like coming back to your childhood home to find that the trees are cut down, the landscape is remodeled, and an amusement park is where your house used to be. Plot is forced, the action contrived, every performance five degrees too silly and three times too camp. The loss of class acts like Nighy, Knightley and dare I say Bloom hits hard but nothing hurts like the loss of Verbinski. Marshall (not to mention Cruz), what the hell are you doing here? Makes me want to rate At World's End higher.

On Stranger Tides is a pointless addition to what is an unsalvageable franchise. This fourth instalment has the family friendliness of the original and isn't as complicated as the previous two disasters. However this film is dull and boring. Johnny Depp entertains but every Jack Sparrow performance damages the credibility of who was once such an original and versatile actor. Glimmers of enjoyment, but forgettable and unnecessary. Do we need a fifth POTC? No. Will we get a fifth POTC? Probably.

Didn't expect much, didn't get much. The plot is held together with shoestring; it doesn't feel like the writers gave any more than 30 seconds of thought to each scene. All of the old characters have long since been played out, and none of the new characters bring anything to the table (Blackbeard especially is disappointingly lacking in menace). It's not as bad as the previous two Pirates entries, but it's not good either.

It does what its supposed to, but besides that the pirates are beginning to overstay their welcome. The third film was drowned in special-effects, so it was nice to see a somewhat back to basics pirates film. Great little stunt making the (extremely hot) mermaids seductive, maneating and did I say hot? Did we miss Orlando and Keira? No. And Blackbeard wasn't evil enough thinking of Davy Jones and crew. But all in all an entertaining film which looses its pace a little along the way.

It has the sacred sin of an entertainment piece being boring. I mean, I don't remember much about the first three except I was fairly entertained. This fails in elementary script math course. While others probably hit this wall one or two movies ago in this franchise, this was the first Pirates film that outright dissapointed me. I see in the skeleton of many a interesting franchise refresher - Blackbeard as a down-to-earth enemy, the problem of faith in a world populated by heathen horror, perhaps a territorial navy drama - but i all drowns in a fantasy kitchen sink with one Jack Sparrow sitting on the surface and seeming more like a weaksauce Daffy Duck.

More in an Indy vein than its predecessors. I appreciate the fresh approach, but the overall experience is a bit bland. Perhaps it's that we don't see enough of Sam Claflin's straight man, who probably should have been the protagonist over Sparrow, who works better when he's not so. The plot doesn't get interesting until Act 2 (around the mermaid scene). Also, the 3D cinematography and stilted compositions make everything look cheap. Pity, considering how cinematic Verbinski's films were.

The first half is nonsensical to the point of absurdity and serves as a reminder that you could be watching the original. The second half is genuinely amusing and good fun. It didn't quite deserve the critical thrashing it was given as it benefits greatly from the absence of Bloom and Knightley and it's better than At Worlds End, although that is an extremely low standard to meet.

Okay pirates, listen up! Seemingly lying to each other only to reveal time and time again (in horribly trite, pseudo-ironic fashion) that the lie was actually the truth... IS NOT WHAT BEING A PIRATE IS ABOUT! Yeah, we get it... very clever. The first time. After that? Try actually lying (and demanding a decent script). Then move on to cheating, stealing, pillaging, murdering, deceiving, and the like. Trust me, it's better that way.

The acting was generally good, despite the fact that Ian McShane was all but wasted. The big failure in this film was the direction -- Rob Marshall can NOT film an action scene to save his life! "Johnny Depp dances for 2 hours." There are other characters, including Sparrow's father for some reason and Blackbeard for another, but none of them are especially important to this meandering plot which stretches out for far too long and has more boring scenes than any of consequence, including a random love story between some guy and a mermaid just thrown in to the pleasure of no-one. Depp's drunken-pirate act is old and not enough to save this horrible movie. Kill this franchise already.

The characters might have more life in them if the writing was put into more skillful hands, but the minds behind this one were clearly out of ideas. So much of the plot just doesn't have to be there: the mermaid/missionary subplot was under developed and unnecessary; the Spanish subplot was barely mentioned to the point where you usually forget about them except for the 3 times they appear. At this point in the series, Depp's character has become extremely predictable - you could see all of his actions and jokes coming from a mile away. The side characters, compared to the original trilogy, are much weaker. The Christfag and the mermaid were both extremely uninteresting characters and the whole motivation of bringing salvation for Blackbeard was unconvincing. To its credit it does have some enjoyable scenes but that's muddled by fairly predictable and mundane tripe.

Stranger this film is not, and if the last two predecessors had anything going for them---it was that they were at least simultaneously odd and interesting, while also boasting several impressive and memorable effects-filled action sequences. The previous chapters were way ahead of 'On Stranger Tides' in terms of creativity, and when they failed, they did so grandly. This chapter storms in and teeters out with little more than a sigh. There was less writing of the 'lets see what wacky acrboatical escapes Depp can do' style even though it was still present. They could have cut the Spanish and the missionary out pretty easily and used that time to develop Blackbeard more which would have made it significantly better.

A much better installment in the Pirates series. This movie really has a stand-alone feel to it. Johnny Depp and Geoffrey Rush return, Knightley and Bloom are missing but I think that might actually help the movie.
Two new additions Penelope Cruz and Ian McShane are great and help the film out.
McShane was especially great as Blackbeard.
The action was well spread out, I laughed really hard a few times and it just had a better story than Pirates 2 & 3. I really enjoyed it, Savvy.

"Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" is an average adventure. The action is relatively well-directed, but uncomfortably repetitive for all those 140 minutes. Marshall's direction is uninspired while the formulaic script indicates the writers must have been lackadaisical when creating it. The cast is decent, apart from Cruz who reaches her zenith as far as ridiculousness is concerned. As for Depp, he repeats the same role once again without notable success.

Less CG (which somehow equals less fun for this series, what else did you really watch it for?), more plot holes than one could swash-buckle at, and it easily takes the award for the worst action scenes of the entire series. Desperately needed more mermaids.

An admirable attempt to return to the series's roots but just doesn't have the charm, wit and excitement that made the original movie so fun.

I was only a couple of scenes in when I decided I couldn't be arsed to go through another 2 hours of this stuff.

What's good about this is Depp and Rush. They're what's made the previous series work and are the only thing making this work. The plot is especially forced with NONE of the leads interested in the fountain so we end up only with B and C players vying for it. This set out to be underwhelming and succeeds in every cliched detail. Can't even recommend the 3D.

The Pirates sequels have always been a bit of a guilty pleasure so it gets my guilty pleasure rating of a 69.

I guess it was ok for a cash grab. What can I say, I was entertained. The cast in this one is more entertaining than the cast in the previous movies, but the plot was average at best.

Loud, bombastic and obnoxious; pulls off the simultaneous feat of being gloomy and dull. Hard to fathom how it could have gone so wrong after the charming 1st and 3rd entries, and quite wonderful 2nd film. A fine cast is hung out to dry delivering an array of equally shrill and irritating performances (you know you're in trouble when you can't even count on Rush) and threadbare plot is padded out to an absurdly bloated running time. A marginally fun opening sequence provides the only interest.

I am not going to justify the reason they made and it's clear it was made to make some cash. Anyway, what they did was OK. Same Jack Sparrow, same story lines. It is like an old joke you've heard many times but it makes you still laugh. Honestly, have you ever seen the fourth installment of any franchise that could bring something new? I guess the they should have called Chris Nolan if they really wanted something new :)

I'm a huge fan of the Pirates franchise, and enjoyed the hell out of this one. It felt a little weird not having Bloom, Knightley, or Nighy, but I liked some of the new characters. Ian McShane is great as Blackbeard, and I enjoyed Sam Claflin as Philip (although I would have liked a bit more about his character.) The relationship between Depp & Cruz could have been better developed, as it felt a bit hollow. Very fun movie.
